Agent Carter Episode 3 Recap: Who Is Jarvis Really?

"Time and Tide" finds the SSR still investigating Howard Stark. One of  his stolen weapons caused a mushroom cloud last week and a license plate registered to him was also found at the scene. They raid the guy without a voice box's apartment. They still dont know who he is but now have his cool typewriter/transmitter. Jarvis gets hauled in for questioning. It turns out he was charged with treason during the war (and was dishonorably discharged from the British military). For some reason the charges were dropped. The agents suspect it was with the help of Stark's money. They threaten Jarvis' mysterious wife Anna with being deported. Peg manages to get Jarvis out of the bind but is chewed out for her (on purpose) stupid mistake. She looks incompetent in front of the men (which is no fun since she's trying so hard to gain their respect).

Back at the women's hotel (sorry I cant remember the name), Molly is kicked out due to her overnight gentleman suitor. Remember, no men are allowed above the first floor (not even Harry Houdini)! Angie invades Peg's apartment. Peg says she cant now. Angie feels hurt and leaves. To be honest Ang, you are a little pushy. Peg cant tell Angie that she must investigate the Stark break where all the weapons were stolen.

Peg at first says she trusts Jarvis and doesnt need to know the details of his past. Then she changes her mind and pushes for info. It turns out Jarvis helped his Jewish wife escape from Hungary during the war by faking his boss's (a general) signature. Then Howard had the treason charges dropped and helped the couple move to America. Peg feels better about taking the fall for Jarvis. But can we trust him? How do we know what he says is true? We've never actually seen Anna. Perhaps I am too paranoid.

They descend into the sewer system and follow it out to the water. Side note: what's with the repelling gear? And how big is Stark's house? I have found the stairs work just as well when you want to get to the basement.

Peg 1, Thug 0

At the dock there is a boat with the same symbol Brannis drew in the dirt before he died. Stark's stolen inventions are inside (or at least some of them). Peg wants to call it in so she can regain her fellow SSR agent's respect. Jarvis says that wont work. She's never going to gain their respect. He disguises his voice and calls with the location. Meanwhile some big thug attacks Peg (and later Jarvis). Jarvis hits him with the constrictor (an invention that constricts all the muscles in the body-- or something like that). Sousa and Krzeminski arrive at the boat. Peg and Jarvis exit two seconds ahead of them.

RIP Unlikeable Dude

Krzeminski is driving the thug  back to the SSR. A man in a fedora rams their car and shoots both dead. Peg arrives at the office and sees everyone is upset. Director Dooley says Howard Stark is still responsible for Krzeminski's death even if he didnt pull the trigger. The director calls Krzeminski's wife to give her the sad news. Sousa calls his girlfriend.

BFFs- For Now

Peg heads over to the diner. Angie is still pissed. Peg says "one of my coworkers died today". Peg is taking it hard even though the guy was a jerk. Peg asks if Angie still has the schnapps and rhubarb pie that she offered earlier. Looks like they're friends again. I really hope Angie doesnt turn out to be a baddie.

We also meet new neighbor Dottie. She's from Iowa (or Nebraska or some such place over there). She's never met anyone British before and is studying to be a ballerina. I suspect she's up to something. I would rather she be the villain than Angie (but they may both be).

Favorite Quotes:

  • Peggy encounters a man hanging from the ledge outside her window in the rain. It turns out he's not the enemy but is trying to visit his girlfriend Molly. "Next one over" she says and closes the window. Too funny.
  • "If you wish to clear Mr Stark's name, you must do it from the shadows."-Jarvis to Peg.
  • "No woman’s gonna trade in a red, white and blue shield for a aluminum crutch."-Krzeminski to Sousa after he finds out Sousa likes Peg.

Grade: 3 3/4 Monsters (out of 5). Not as fast paced as the first episode but that one was perfection. I'm still loving Peg, Jarvis, Ang, Sousa and everything about the 1940s.
