Constantine Episode 9 Recap: Exorcisms Are Hell

"Constantine" returned on Friday with the second episode of it's two parter entitled "Saint Of Last Resorts". When we last saw John, he was in the sewers of Mexico City with a gunshot to the gut courtesy of Sister Anne Marie. To make matters worse a Invunche was down there with him. In story line B, Zed was back at the wheel house. A group of people were forcibly trying to take her back to her father. She evades a few but the final guy injects her with a syringe full of something. She passes out.

And now to this week's episode. John escapes then Invunche but inviting a demon named Pazuzu into his body. Manny appears. He's not a happy angel. John did not ask for God's help to get out of the bind. Instead he went straight for the demon. John, dont expect Manny's assistance with anything in the near future. John tells Chas that he has a few days before the demon takes over completely. He asks Chas to kill him before that happens.

Meanwhile back in the states, Zed is being transported in a van. She creates a ruckus. The driver gets out with a syringe and opens the back door. She instead injects him (and kicks the crap out of him for good measure). Zed is really serious about not going back to her father.

Zed talks with Chas and hops the first plane for Mexico City. They cant find Constantine. We know he's in prison after wiping out what looks like 10 men. A gang tries to push him around. Not a good idea. The demon kills them all. Demons trump bad guys every time. John is now in charge. Chas and Zed located Anne Marie and ask for her help. She is reluctant. After all, she is the one that shot him in the first place. And they used to be an item back in Britain. She still has unsolved feelings of love and/or hate towards him. She finally joins the team.

Sister Anne Marie bilocates to the prison and tells him what's up. A guy from the British Embassy that met with John is eaten. We find out the demon is named Nanashe (or Vicente). He's working with the Brujeria. They want their babies. Nanashe was the original tempter/snake at the Garden of Eden. We dont learn anything else about him.

Zed and Chas sneak into the prison. Her by pretending to be a hooker. Him by getting beat up. Whatever works for ya people. Sister Anne Marie shows up too. They have a plan but before it can take effect, Nanashe shows up. Anne Marie stabs him with a knife. He dissolves into a bunch of slithering snakes. That seemed too easy didnt it?

Next they shoot John up with all the spare heroin in prison (to slow down the demon). But they cant get past the outside guard (because Chas previously broke his nose getting into prison). Anne Marie astral projects herself in just underwear. The guard is so busy looking at her that he lets them pass unnoticed.

They get Constantine back to the wheel house. An exorcism is performed. Pazuzu tries to use each person's weaknesses against them. He tells Anne Marie she's a failure. Chas lost his entire family including his precious daughter. Zed will go crawling back to her daddy. John levitates off the bed in a big way. That was fun. Anne Marie finally gets rid of Pazuzu after being encourages/threatened by Zed. John looks up and sees Manny there too. I wonder how much of the success is due to Manny? He just smiles and disappears again.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). I hoped for more of a smackdown between Constantine and the Invunche. The Tempter was also dispatched too easily. Zed's kidnap plot should have been extended longer. But I really enjoyed the possession scenes with Constantine so that pushed the score up to to a 4.
