12 Monkeys Episode 10 Review: Splinter, Apocalypse, Rinse, Repeat

Much of "Divine Move" is spent in the future. In 2043 Ramse is still trying to make sure the past does not change so his family wont be erased. He destroys Jones' timeline board. I really hope she had backup notes. He also steals the material they inject Cole with before each trip. Cole tells Jones where he thinks Ramse is hiding (in an old amusement park) IF she promises he won't be killed.

Cole and Cassie meet again in 2015. He crashes Aaron's and Cassie's romantic dinner. If I was Aaron, I'd be like "Dude, I know its the end of the world and all but I'm trying to make time with my lady so splinter back at a better time." Instead when Cassie sees Cole she leaves Aaron in the dust. Remember the last time they were together, Cassie died in Cole's arms (but she doesnt know that). Cole learns that the virus originated in Tokyo at a place called the "White Dragon Club". And with that, he's gone again. Cassie asks Aaron to help her continue the mission. She kisses him. Do you feel any chemistry between these two? Cause I dont. I'm team Casserole all the way.

Good Luck Figuring Out What Jen Is Talking About

Ramse gets a glimpse of "The Daughters" (an all female nomadic group). He sees the 12 Monkeys symbol on a box they're carrying.  He approaches the women to ask about it. A mysterious figure steps into view. She says "12 is not primary". It is of course Jennifer Goines (although in an aged version). Old Jennifer speaks in her usual cryptic manner. She says "It's all out of order but there's still time for you and me. We have work to finish. We have to undo what I've done, you've done, what Cole's done." She also again calls Cole "otter eyes" (whatever that means). Jen gives Ramse a necklace saying he will need it later. She previously took it off of the Pallid Man. Jennifer mentions the Witness. We have yet to see him.

Meanwhile Whitley and team are at the amusement park looking for Cole. Elena is accidentally shot and killed. Ramse is not going to be happy since he just reconnected with her two weeks ago.

I Still Dont Trust You Aaron

In the past Cassie finds Dr Peters in a cargo container. He made the virus for the monkeys in order to protect his husband Jason (not knowing he was already killed by the Pallid Man). Dr Peters asks Cassie to kill him but she cant bring herself to do it. Meanwhile Aaron encounters the Striking Woman (can these people please get some names already?). She says "Dr Reilly is very important to us and to you. Tell me. What are you willing to do to keep her alive?"

I Will Save You Son... By Abandoning You And Traveling To The Past.

In the future Ramse breaks back into the facility and encounters Jones. He wants to blow up the time machine. Max tries to stop him but is shot and dies. Her death doesnt have much of an effect since we barely knew her. Sorry Max. Cole comes out of deep freeze (where he's been most of the episode) just in time to see Ramse leave in the time machine. Uh oh. These two besties are now going to become mortal enemies.

Favorite Quotes:

  • "Splinter, apocalypse, rinse, repeat"- Cassie to Cole. That sums up this show perfectly.
  • "12 is not primary"- Old Jennifer.
  • "Nothing is preordained. No matter how it seems...Death can be both cause and effect. No straight lines."- Old Jennifer to Ramse.
  • "What we do here still happened in God's eyes"- Jones to Whitley about what to do about Ramse.
  • "It's all out of order but there's still time for you and me. We have work to finish. We have to undo what I've done, you've done, what Cole's done."- Old Jennifer to Ramse.
  • "If Cole is right, you and I dont have a future"- Cassie to Aaron.
  • "Your daughter is the past. My son is the future."- Ramse to Jones.
  • "Dr Reilly is very important to us and to you. Tell me. What are you willing to do to keep her alive?"- the Striking Woman to Ramse.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). With only three episodes to go in the season, "12 Monkeys" is ratcheting up the stakes. Will Ramses' trip to the past destroy everything Cole/Cassie/Jones have worked so hard for? Is Ramse the "Witness" that Jennifer and the Whispering Lady referred to?

What I like about "12 Monkeys" is not only the time travel (which is great fun) but also the deep morale questions it brings up. How far would you go to save the person that you love most? Would you give up 6 billion lives for them? Dr Peters chose his husband. Ramse chose his son (although he conveniently forgets that he left the child in the future without a mother or father to help him). Aaron apparently is going to chose Cassie. Jones says she's trying to save mankind but her actions point to her real motive being saving her daughter. Remember she also burnt what could have been the cure from Foster last week. Cassie and Cole seen to the only people who are genuinely willing to risk everything to save humanity--even if that means losing each other.

On a side note, what's up with the red leaves? When Cole splintered from Cassie in 2015 the leaves on a plant turned red. Remember Cassie also took a trippy visit to the Red Forest a while back. And Jennifer said something about it not being red "unless he's been there". I have no idea what any of this means.

Let's everybody meet back here in 1987 to see what happens next.
