12 Monkeys Episode 9 Review: Keeping Up With The Joneses

"Tomorrow" was one of the best episodes of "12 Monkeys" to date. We all knew Cassie died in 2017 but this is the first time we've actually seen it. And in the future Jones opened a can of whoop ass on Foster. I had underestimated how far she would go to make sure her plan succeeds.

In 2041 we see how Jones met Cole and Ramse. They were scavenging for food to survive. Jones learns that one of the men is named "Cole". She tells Cole of his destiny. He wants none of her hocus pocus. Ramse makes sure he stays. It seems that Jones already knew Cole when they met. Is there more to their relationship than meets the eye? Some have speculated that Jones is actually Cassie. I'm not sure how that is possible but time will tell.

Let Us Not Forget The Horrible Things Foster Has Done As Well

Jump to 2043 where Jones is going to take Spearhead's core (to power the time machine) at any cost. She again asks Foster to give her the core. He again refuses. And in the middle of reminiscing about their old friendship, Jones pulls out a gun and shoots Foster dead. I didnt see that coming. Next her troops attack Spearhead and kill everyone in sight. Whitley's dad also dies during the battle. Ramse manages to escape with girlfriend Elena and their son Sam.

Im Sure This Will Not Be The Last Time We See Cassie Die

In 2017 Cole arrives at the CDC. Cassie is close to death. She says they're had time together during the past two years but this Cole doesnt remember it yet. What does she mean? My guess is they had lots of sexy times. Cassie gives Cole an address that will help explain everything. With that, Cassie promptly dies in Cole's arms. Oh the feels. And we also see the scratch on Cassie's watch is gone. Hmmm.

For The Sake Of Mankind, Please Return This Crazy Person To The Asylum

Meanwhile Jennifer Goines is outside the CDC protesting. She goes on a tirade about disappearing men and the 12 Monkeys. Did she start the 12 Monkeys or is she just parroting something she heard from her father? If she did start it, the 12 Monkeys appear to be all women (which would put an interesting twist on the story). Either way she's still cray cray.

BFFs No More

Cole splinters back to 2043. Ramse wants him to stop time traveling (because if he succeeds Sam and Elena will never have existed). Cole and Jones are convinced this is the only way to save humanity (and Jones wants to undo her daughter dying from the plague). To me it's a no brainer. The lives of the many (some 6 billion people) outweigh the needs of the few. Ramse does not agree. To counter Ramse's argument, what's not to say that a different version of each person would exist anyway if time is reset? This time travel stuff is exhausting. I need to lay down for a few.

And in what I think was the most shocking reveal of the episode, it turns out Foster did have a cure for the virus (I think). But Jones is set on doing it her way (and burns his research so there is no evidence). So who's crazier now-- Foster or Jones? I think they both might be equally touched. It just so happens that she killed him first.

Favorite Quotes:
  • "Im not here to ask. I will have your core. The only thing undecided is whether you will give it to me or if I must take it."- Jones to Foster.
  • "Goodbye Jonathan, for now"- Jones to Foster when she shoots him dead.
  • "This dark time must be sacrificed to restore a brighter one. We have no other choice. And if all this disappears so too shall we, and you and I will start anew."- Jones to Cole.
  • "The thunder of fallen men, great men, our fathers forfeiting their world, their legacy, not for their sons, for their wives, for their mothers, for their daughters. And when disappearing men die on their words, we daughters will make from 12 what men could not. Yes, an army. You see him. Twelve's not primary but 13. Yes little monkey"- Jennifer outside the CDC with protesters. I have no idea what this really means.
  • "There is no future. The mission is all that matters."- Jones.

Grade: 5 Monsters (out of 5). An excellent episode. The jumps between the three time periods was seamless. The massacre at Spearhead was shot to perfection. The scene where two people were killed in silhouette was impressive. The slow motion and the music really conveyed the enormity of their situation. I'm so happy "12 Monkeys" was renewed for a second season. It's become one of my most favorite shows on television.
