One Scary Undead Dude
"The Returned" continues it's tradition of naming episodes after a character. "Milan" refers to Serge and Toni's father who has returned from the dead. We learn he is the person who 35 years ago organized the attack that killed Victor (his real name is Louis) and his mother. Was the plan to scare them into leaving town? If so, why? Victor's father was shot during the home invasion but did not die. Is he the old man we see in a coma at the end of the episode? There is also mention of a brother. Victor says he will not come back because he is not dead. Is he Berg? Who was the other killer besides Pierre?
I'm Not Sure About Victor's Mom Yet
We also learn that Mr Costa was the boy's teacher (and apparently in on Milan's plan). What else does the mysterious Madame Costa know? Victor's mom doesnt want him drawing pictures. When challenged by Julie she says "You dont know him. You have no idea what my husband and I have done for him. You have no right to judge." Do Victor's drawings come back to life?
Adele has her baby. She refuses to name it or even see the child. She finally breaks down when it is near death. She touches the baby and it comes back to life. What is that about? Simon again heads back across the lake to see Adele and the baby (which Lucy thinks is the key to the deadies).
Audrey (who returned last week) is now joined by Esteban. Camille tries to explain to them what happened but they don't buy it. She takes them to the memorial for the victims of the bus crash. In an emotional scene they understand that no one is coming for them because they're dead. Camille also finds a touching letter from Lena. Another kid shows up. I dont know who he is.
Run Claire! Run!
After Camille, Audrey and Estaban ran out of the house, Claire goes looking for them. She is corners by some deadies. They beat her nearly to death... or perhaps they kill her and she is resurrected. I'm not sure. Either way she is found by a mysterious man who takes her back home. Camille finds her there.
Other Points To Ponder:
- Beardy Man Jerome tells Lena that he has developed a theory regarding the returnees. She thinks he's cray cray. I didnt catch everything he said but its something about them coming full circle.
- Who exactly are those people that beat up Claire? Are they working for Lucy? Is their job to keep the undead from leaving?
- What is eating the creatures including the stag? Is it a different kind of returned?
- What are Pierre and the Helping Hands crew up to? Are try trying to trap all the undead (starting with Toni)?
- Lena ends up back at Serge's house. Not a good idea since he's a serial killer and papa Milan may be worse than him. Both Serge and Lucy are scared of him.
- Berg examines the old dam. He discovers a LARGE hole next to it. What's up with that?
- And in the final scene, the team searching for Audrey happen upon a horrible scene. There are a number of dead people deep in the woods tied halfway up trees. Are they the police officers (gendarmes) from the season 1 finale? I fear they are. Is Laure among them?
Favorite Quotes:
- "Nobody is coming for you."- Camille to the newly arrived dead.
- "I don't have them all but when I do, I think I'll crack the puzzle."- Jerome to Lena.
- "How do you know you're immortal? Do you know the rules."- Unknown teenager to Camille.
- "That's not Toni."- Pierre about the undead Toni.
Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). Another excellent episode. The mysteries keep piling up as the undead keep returning (except for all those poor people tied to trees). What could that giant hole possibly have to do with anything?
