Defiance Season 3 Epi 5 Review: The Daily Special Seems To Be Scrambled Brains

A good part of "History Rhymes" is dedicates to Irisa and Nolan flashbacks-- while Doc Yewll, Amanda and Samir the vet rush to save their lives. When Nola and Irisa were in the sleeping pod together last season, the arktech altered their brains. If one gets too far from the other they both suffer severe brain damage. Amanda refers to it as "bluetooth for the brain". To save them Yewll must operate. The catch is, the device has to be extracted from each person's brain at EXACTLY the same time. To accomplish this Doc needs an Omec drone. It creates a hologram of both Irisa and Nolan's brains and works on Irisa while Yewll does the same to Nolan. In the end, Doc could not remove the arktech. Instead she repaired them. This means that the two still can not get farther than a mile away from each other or deja vu all over again. Dont ask me specifics of the surgery-- I have no idea.

Welcome Back Kindzi, We Missed You

Needing the drone does give us a chance to see Kindzi again so I'm all for it. While Doc was operating, Kindzi copies her entire DNA blueprint. T'evgin tells her to destroy it. They can not risk the humans blocking their access to the gulamite they need to repair their ship. And what is this Omec "Dead Harvest" that Kindzi refers to? Uh, just from the name it doesnt sound too good.

Is There A Family Therapist In Defiance?

In flashbacks we learn that Nolan wasnt always the bad ass we see currently. As a scared boy he accidentally caused his sister's death when a Votan tricked him. We also see Nolan and a young Irisa. She is very cute. She originally was no violent. He trained her to kill people and a one point she thought about stabbing him in his sleep in order to get away. I guess their relationship is not as solid as we thought.

In story line B, Datak and Stahma are still trying to figure out how to get Alak back alive. Poisoning T'evgin didnt work so Stahma will continue to try to use her womanly ways. Their discussion has two of the funniest lines of the episode (and possibly the season). Datak tells baby Luke "Grandma loves purple enchanter penis so much...she's forgotten all about Grandpa." Followed by "Contrary to what you may think dear, your chivo is not magic". Later Datak decides he will shoot T'evgin. Stahma says it wont work because he's powerful. Datak tries anyway but Stahma kisses T'evgin in order to block Datak's shot. Those two are seriously the best part of this show.

If I Had A Dollar For Every Time One Of The Tarrs Tried To Kill Each Other...

And in the final scene, Alak arrives home after escaping General Rahm Tak. He immediately walks in the door and holds a knife to his mother's throat. Uh, I guess that means he hasnt forgiven her for Christie's death. To be continued...

Favorite Quotes:

  • "Grandma loves purple enchanter penis so much...she's forgotten all about Grandpa."- Datak to baby Luke.Hilarious!
  • Datak: "Contrary to what you may think dear, your chivo is not magic". Stahma: "On many occasions you've said different".
  • "The daily special seems to be scrambled brains"- Yewll about Nolan and Irisa.
  • "Gee, thanks Doc for saving us from certain death. Hey no problems kids...anytime. Grab a lollipop on your way out"- Doc Yewll sarcastically talking to herself when she gets no thanks from Nolan and Irisa.
  • Kindzi: "Remember this Indogene, I am a skilled biotechnologist. You try anything tricky when youre connected to my system. I will see it and kill you quickly." Doc Yewll: "Now see, I was gonna kill you slowly. I like a little bit of foreplay."

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). A little slower than other episodes by the flashbacks definitely helped flesh out Nolan and Irisa's relationship. We also got to see Doc Yewll (who gets far too little air time IMHO). And I've said it many times before but Datak and Stahma's relationship is the best part of this show. That is one crazy, dysfunctional Casti family.
