Defiance Season 3 Episodes 1 Thru 2 Reviews: Now Thats How To Do A Season Premiere

When we last caught up with the residents of Defiance, Irisa had been used by the Kaziri to destroy New York City and kill untold humans (including Tommy). Then she and Nolan were encased in a pod and buried deep within the McCawley mines. Rafe and the Tarrs were in search of ex wife Pilar and son Q who had kidnapped Alak, Christie and their unborn baby.  

Stahma's Winter Wardrobe Is Smashing As Always

The season 3 two parter premiere "The World We Seize" and "The Last Unicorns" picks back up some seven months later. It's winter time and everyone appears to be freezing. The Earth Republic (E Rep) is in shambles. The economy of Defiance has collapsed. Amanda is again mayor. They do not have enough energy to keep their stasis net up so are vulnerable to any marauders. 

Yep You're A First Class A Hole

The Voltanis Collective lead by General Rahm Tak attempts to seize control. The Tarrs and Rafe find Pilar's hideout but the house is approached by Tak's army first. Quentin comes out but is quickly shot in the head in front of Rafe (who along with the Tarrs allowed himself to be captured earlier). Rafe, knowing the rest of his family is in jeopardy, steals a gun and tries to wipe out the as many soldiers as possible. He doesnt get far. He is also shot. Then Christie hugs his limb body while shouting curses in Casti. Tak tells Stahma that either she kills Christie or Datak will be murdered. Stahma sees that the baby is hidden in a closet. She slits Christie's throat. And with that, the entire McCawley family (except for Pilar) is dead. The "Defiance" writers appear to have been watching too much "Game of Thrones". I definitely didnt see that coming. Luckily Alak, Pilar and baby Luke escape under cover of darkness. Pilar kills two people and takes their trailer. Alak awakes in the night to find Pilar and Luke gone. He follows the footsteps in the snow. 

The McCawleys In Better Times

Next we encounter a new race of aliens. They are purple with fangs and apparently are known as the Omec. The Father is named T'evgin and the daughter is Kindzi. In fact Kindzi is the reason Nola and Irisa are released from their pod. She is shot by Amanda when she later tries to kill them. 

Why Can I Never Get Out Of This God Forsaken Town

They take Kindzi back to Defiance and Doc Yewll. Yewll is scared to death of her saying that the Omec preyed on the other Voltans. Their motto is "conquer, kill, devour". Kindzi escapes but not before killing a Casti boy. A mob forms to capture/kill her. Her father T'evgin arrives. There's going to be hell to pay if something happens to his little girl. They finally end up patching her up by forcibly extracting some skin from Yewll. That looked like it hurt.  

Irisa continues to struggle with herself after being the vehicle of such destruction. However some view her as a hero-- even writing a cheesy pulp fiction novel about her. I suspect there will be conflict between Irisa and Nolan this season due to previous events. Nolan also killed a Casti who was trying to avenge his son's death at the hands off Kindzi. Irisa was not happy because she thought she had successfully talked him out of seeking revenge. 

It's Best Not To Piss Off A Big Purple Vampire Cannibal

T'evgin and Nolan agree to work together. He needs the gulamite from the mines to restore his ship's power. The town needs it for the stasis nets. And in the last scene we see all of the Omec in hibernation chambers on their ship. If they really view humans as slaves and/or a food source we're in lots of trouble.  

Favorite Quotes:

• "If she has harmed them, she will die an excruciating death... And if she hasnt harmed them... Same outcome, I see your point"- Stahma to Datak about Pilar. My, how I have missed you Stahma!
• "I'm going to kill all the humans and burn the disgusting place to the ground"- General Tak. 
• "Make me a weapon too. It is better we die together."- Stahma to Datak after they are captured by Tak. 
• "These are my terms. You will bring me my daughter or I will bathe in the blood of every human and Votan until my rage is cleansed."-T'evgin. So far I'm loving the Omecs! 
• "Conquer, kill, devour. Put it on a tshirt so you dont forget"- Yewll regarding the Omecs. Is she the best or what?

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). The show was a little slow in episode two but I still loved it. General Tak and the Omec are the two big bads so far this season. I was very surprised that the McCawley clan was wiped out-- may they RIP. So far I'm loving the purple Omecs. Purple is, after all, my favorite color.
