Salem Season 2 Episodes 12-13 Reviews: There Is No Easy Way Out Mary, For Any Of Us (Season Finale)

Thus ends season 2 of "Salem". The Grand Rite never happened and hell never came to earth. To be honest, I'm a little disappointed. I have waited two years for an EPIC battle between the forces of good and evil. Dont get me wrong. "Midnight Never Came" and "The Witching Hour" had some shocking scenes. They just werent what I was expecting. I was hoping for fire, brimstone and lots of demons. Well at least we got some fire. Perhaps that used up all the allotted budget. Anyway, on to the show:

We learn that Anne is really the Countess' daughter. Nope, I definitely did NOT see that coming. Well played "Salem". Cotton finally learns that he is married to a witch and he's none too happy. It looks like the honeymoon is over. Disclaimer: I was wrong about episode 11 when I thought the Countess had posed as Anne in order to get Little John. It was really Anne after all. She traded John Jr to Marburg in exchange for Cotton's life. That Anne is such a romantic.

The Countess drowns Little John so he can be resurrected as her "dark lord". He finally awakens. The Devil has the hots for Mary and the Countess is SUPER jealous. How many centuries has she been trying to resurrect him and this is the thanks she gets. All I have to say is "ugh, gross".

Yep I'm Totally Rocking This Little White Dressing Gown

Lucifer Lite holds court with the Countess, Mercy, Anne, Tituba and Sebastian. He bites off Mercy's finger. Haa, that was funny and unexpected. He kisses Tituba on the head and tells her to run far away from Salem. Later he resurrects some Devil Birds and sends them to peck out Tituba's eyes. Surely she didnt think she was getting away that easy.

Meanwhile Mercy is still upset because she wanted to marry Sebastian and be a princess. That poor girl is delusional. Marburg throws her out saying she will eat Mercy alive if she ever sees her again.

We Would Call The Fire Department...But It Hasnt Been Invented Yet

Mary prays in church. The Countess goes to retrieve her. She will be the Devil's bride. Mary sets the church on fire. Mary almost gets the best of Marburg when Anne shows up and makes it rain inside the church. Later the Countess tells Sebastian he must kill Mary so the Shrimp Satan can stop obsessing over her (and appreciate Marburg instead).

Star Crossed Lovers

Anne pulls a "George Sibley" on Cotton and shoves Brown Jenkins down his throat. Side Note: Isnt Brown a mouse? That looked like a rat to me... but what do I know. Anne says she is protected Cotton but it looks like she's only silencing him to save herself.

You're A Quart Low

Sebastian takes Mary into the woods to drain her blood for the Countess. Mary is ready to die and doesnt put up a fight. He sets her free and points her into John's direction. He's been laying on the ground for the entire episode. I didnt like Sebastian at first but he has redeemed himself. She stumbled through the woods and finds a nearly dead John Alden. She gives him her remaining blood. John awakens but Mary is D-E-A-D. He says "Please dont go. I love you".

Meanwhile Marburg tells the pint sized Beelzebub that Mary Sibley is dead. "She threw herself from a high place and the river carried her away". He doesnt take the news well and stabs the Countess over and over again with a knife. Sebastian heads back to the ship and opens her coffin. Her rotting corpse is there mumbling. He says "Someday perhaps but not today. Goodbye mother!". And with that, he closes the coffin and leaves. Haaa, the Countess really should have been nicer to her son.

Miscellanea:

  • Issac somehow manages to survive the season even after his run in with Mercy (who was trying to steal yet another little girl for her beauty regiment).
  • Wainwright is still MIA. I guess he's not returning from Hell after all. I expected him to come to Mary's assistance during the finale.
  • My favorite part of season 2 was watching the Countess and Mary square off against each other. I loved it when they hurled insults. I would watch a whole show of just that.

Favorite Quotes:

  • "You are not my son. You are his tomb"- Mary to John Jr.
  • "You have nothing left to threaten me with. My son is gone. My love dead. My own life worthless to me. You are all out of threats."- Mary Sibley.
  • "Why are you praying to God? He is blind and deaf."- Countess to Mary.
  • "Do you remember how it felt the last time you burned?"- Mary to Countess.
  • "There is no easy way out Mary...for any of us."-  Anne to Mary.
  • "Mary Sibley is finished. She must not be allowed to see another sun rise."- Countess to Sebastian.
  • "I have no choice, not then and not now"- Anne to Cotton.
  • Mary: "Why are you doing this?" Sebastian: "I too am capable of unconditional love. Someday when you have buried your past and I have buried mine, we may meet again".
  • "She threw herself from a high place and the river carried her away"- Countess to the Devil on what happened to Mary.
  • "Please dont go. I love you"- John to a dead Mary.
  • "Someday perhaps but not today, goodbye mother"- Sebastian to Corpse Countess.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). Gone are Tituba (eyes gouged out), Mary (looks dead), and the Countess (can she be permanently killed?). John lives (although he ALMOST crossed over). Cotton lives but is a shell of his former self. Anne lives (cause she's a very powerful witch and the Countess' daughter). Sebastian lives (he has grown on me). And lastly, the Prince of Darkness lives (cause...duh...he's the Devil).

Will there be a season 3 of "Salem"? WGN has not announced it's plans yet. But where else could the story go? They waited two years for the Devil and he finally arrived (in the form of a cute little boy). The main character (Mary) is dead (or so we think). All the other main characters (save Hawthorne) know about the witches.

I think this is a fitting place to end the series. Poor Mary did the best she could with the hand she was dealt. Being a Puritan woman, she had very few choices. Things were always going to end poorly for her. As Anne said "There is no easy way out Mary...for any of us".
