Angelica appears to various people around the world. A mysterious man (who we later find out is Mr Whispers) arrives. He says there's lots of work to be done and that she's threatened to kill herself before. This time she's not bluffing though and shoots herself in the mouth.
The eight sensates (apparently that's what we call people who are telepathically connected) include:
- Lito- an actor in Mexico City. He has a big secret.
- Sun- a businesswoman in Seoul Korea. She's also a kick boxer.
- Will- a police officer in Chicago. He has a difficult relationship with his alcoholic ex cop father.
- Wolfgang- a criminal/safe cracker in Berlin.
- Riley- an Icelandic club DJ currently living in London. She inadvertently ends up in the middle of some major trouble.
- Kala- a woman in Mumbai who is about to be marry a man she doesnt love.
- Capheus- a man in Nairobi who drives a "Van Damn" van (as in Jean Claude Van Damme). Too funny!
- Nomi- a transexual hacktivist in San Francisco. We meet her caring girlfriend Amanita and her hideous mother. Nomi is diagnosed with UFLS (whatever that is) and the prognosis is dire.
We learn about "limbic resonance". Apparently its a biological synaptic network (or something like that). It connects all living organisms. Those connected can draw from each others thoughts, feelings and skill sets.
Jonas first appears to Nomi. He says Dr Metzger plans to lobotomize her. She of course cant tell if Jonas is real or a side effect of her brain disorder. Meanwhile the Chicago PD and Will begin the search for Jonas (who is wanted by the US government for murder). Will thinks his visions are somehow connected to the murder of a woman named Sarah.
Jonas next appears to Will in a store. He explains a little about sensates. Angelica gave birth to them. He tells Will that Nomi in San Francisco needs his help (just like Sarah did). I have no idea what that means yet. I enjoyed the car chase scene. Will chases Jonas. Then ends up in the car with him. Jonas says "If you're here, who's back there?" Will then ends up back in his car.
Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). It's too early to tell but I am intrigued by the story. I find the characters compelling (especially Nomi's). Everyone needs a girlfriend like Amanita.
