The Whispers Episode 1 Review: You Know The Drill (Series Premiere)

I'm not much for scary children but wanted to give "The Whispers" a try. It stars Lily Rabe (Sister Mary Satan on "American Horror Story") so that's an added bonus. Stephen Spielberg serves as executive producer. While I enjoy many of his movies, I have conflicting feelings about some of his TV shows. I made it through the first season of "Extant" (mainly because of Halle Berry) but was underwhelmed in the end. I gave up on "Under The Dome" long ago.

The Cast

"X Marks The Spot" begins with a little girl and her imaginary friend. They chat about the rules of a game. Harper lures her mom up to their tree house. The mom ends up crashing to the ground below thanks to Harper's expert carpentry skills. Did Harper win the game? Nope, miraculously the woman is still alive (but in a coma). On to the next child.

While at her son's baseball game, FBI Agent Claire Bennigan (Rabe) gets a call from her boss. She's specializes in child crimes. She has been on leave because her Air Force husband (Sean) was killed in action. She also has an adorable son named Henry. He became deaf several years ago. Oh dear, this family has been through a lot.

Claire interviews Harper. It's all Drill's fault. Thanks to the internet, Claire quickly finds out Drill told another boy to blow up the family business. The boy's mother (who is in a mental hospital) noticed a heavily tattooed man across the street right before the bomb was detonated.

A John Doe wakes up in the hospital. He doesnt know his name but keeps saying "its too late" and "they're searching for the lights". Harper shows up in his room. That little girl gets around. At the end of the episode, we learn that the mysterious man may in fact be Claire's supposedly deceased husband Sean.

Bob, Go Stand Really Close To That Thing So We Can Take A Picture

Cut over to hubby's downed plane (minus the body) in the desert. They find a giant weird "something" that absorbs electricity. I have no idea how it works. Wes is the US agent investigating this phenomenon. He and Claire were once an item. OK then.

Meanwhile another kid (Minx) has an encounter with Drill. She's up to something big because she's drawing pictures of the White House. It turns out her father is wait for... he's Wes. So now all the story lines are connected.

How Bout A Big Hug Drill?

In the last scene Henry is visited by Drill (who gives him back his hearing). Uh oh. What does Henry have to do in exchange?

Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). Not horrible but so far not enough substance to keep me coming back regularly. So Drill is an alien who communicates with children via electrical pulses? And he plans to take over the world so that's why he has his eye on the President? If he can telepathically communicate with children, why cant he just do his own dirty work? Thus, saving everyone a lot of time. Yes, I know, dont think too much. Just B-E-L-I-E-V-E.
