Dark Matter Epi 1 Review: Lost In Space (Series Premiere)

"Dark Matter" premiered on Friday night at 10 ET on the SyFy channel. It follows the story of six people who wake up on a ship in deep space. No one on board has any recollection of who they are. In lieu of names they go by One, Two, Three, etc in the order they woke up in. It quickly becomes evident that each has a special skill set (one can pilot the ship, one can blow stuff up, one is good with martial arts/swords, one is good with electronics, one is diplomatic, one is big, etc. They are joined by an android who has has a direct neural link to the ship.

Five's memory gets jostled. She has nightmares about something scary behind a metal door and of murders and scooping someone's eyeballs out. Cross over to one if the six trying to blow said door up. Probably not the best idea.

They eventually arrive at what seems to be the ship's destination-- a mining planet. Scary lizard people are supposed to attack soon. A multi-corp wants the planet they currently inhabit. Should the traveler's share their arsenal and help the citizens? I guess so. But in the last minute twist it appears they are the murderers who were sent to kill the planet's inhabitants. Uh oh. Is it really true? If so, will they go through with it or start fresh and become good guys? Or does anyone even care?

Grade: 3 Monsters (out of 5). I tuned in mainly to see Zoie Palmer (the android). She is also Dr Lauren on "Lost Girl". Will that be enough to keep me coming back? I'm not sure. There doesnt seem to be anything new here in terms of characters or plot. And to be honest the set looks pretty low budget at times-- especially when they're running through the ship. It reminds me of a 1980's B movie. What's up with all the neon?
