Episode 1 of "Get Out Alive with Bear Gryllis" aired this week. The show airs on NBC and was filmed in New Zealand. There are 10 teams (20 people total). Each week Bear will vote the weakest off. The prize for the winning team is $500,000. There are several married/ engaged couples, several sets of best friends, a mother/ daughter team, a father/ son team and a father/ daughter team. Each team draws a knife with one of four areas that they'll be responsible for. They are:
- Shelter
- Obstacle
- Food
- Fire
I am liking the show so far because it focuses on teamwork (not stabbing each other in the back). For that, see the "Siberia" review. But Bear, don't think we didn't notice the shameless product placement with the Bear Gryllis knives and jackets and hats and backpacks. I expect we'll be seeing lots more products in upcoming episodes. Not that I don like his stuff, cause I do.
What we learned this week:
- Fire needs oxygen, heat and fuel.
- To drink your own urine, add some muddy water, boil to 95 degrees Celsius (not Fahrenheit), then cool to 60 degrees, then drink. I think this was just for shock value. The jury is still out on if you should or shouldn't do this during an emergency. Grade: Since this is a reality show no grade will be assigned. Vanessa and Erica were the first team to be eliminated. So far, I'm still liking "Naked and Afraid" better because you can learn more skills.
