Naked And Afraid Episodes 1-2 Recap: No Room For Modesty Here (Season Premiere)

We've seen two people thrown in the woods to try to find their way out before (Dual Survival, etc.) but we've never seen them minus their clothing. Yes, this is a shameless ploy to get people to watch the show but bravo to you Discovery Channel. I first thought each episode's participants were a couple. Then I learned that the naked man and named woman don't know each other. Well. that adds an interesting new twist. Are there going to be hookups? We'll see. I think they'll be too exhausted to worry about it.

The premise per the website is "Each week on Naked & Afraid, a new pair of strangers must learn to survive together for 21 days with no food, no water, no tools...and no clothing". They each get to bring one personal item (I would make mine some pants). They also get a map of the area. At the end of the 21 days, they must walk out to their extraction point. Each person is evaluated and given a PSR (primitive survival rating) based on skill, experience and metal factors.

Note: Per the "Rule of 3s" human can survive:
  • 3 minutes without air
  • 3 hours without shelter
  • 3 days without water
  • 3 weeks without food.
Episode 1:
  • Team: Shane and Kim
  • Location: Costa Rican Jungle
  • PSR (primitive survival rating): Beginning: Shane is 7.6, Kim is 5.8; Ending: Shane 8.4, Kim 7.8
  • Personal items: Shane brought a fire starter and Kim brought a machete.
  • Challenges: It rained for a # of days in the Costa Rican jungle. There were several encounters with the Fer de Lance snake (which is extremely poisonous). One bit a producer before filming started. Their shelter burnt to the ground since they had to move the fire under it (after the rain started). Kim developed food poisoning after eating a turtle.
Episode 2:
  • Team: EJ and Kelly
  • Location: Tanzania and the Serengeti plains
  • PSR: Beginning: EJ 7.3, Kelly 7.5; Ending: EJ 8.3, Kelly 8.1
  • Personal items: EJ brought a knife and Kelly brought a pot
  • Challenges: Thorns everywhere. EJ got a really bad foot infection and had to seek medical attention. There were lots of dangerous predators including hyenas. Trying to keep the fire going during rainstorms was challenging.

From Discovery.com:

Episode 2: Terror in Tanzania (Sunday June 30)

Dropped off in the remote and brutally hot African location of Tanzania, two survivalists take on the "endless plains" of the Serengeti to survive for 21 days. They must overcome the challenges of the tough terrain and the dangerous predator-filled environment as they encounter the circle of life right before their eyes. Between navigating the thorny landscape barefoot, suffering from lack of fire, sleep, food, water, and encountering a frightening threat from a pack of hungry hyenas, EJ Snyder and Kellie Nightlinger embark on what will prove to be a very challenging and gruesome 21 days.

Episode 1: The Jungle Curse (Sunday, June 23)

Two naked survivalists, Shane Lewis and Kim Shelton, are challenged to survive for 21 days in the Costa Rican jungle. While in the lush rainforest, Shane and Kim endure every challenge imaginable, including torrential downpours, illness, a shelter fire, and a deadly encounter with the venomous snake that put the show's producer in a life-threatening situation.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). I'm giving anyone who has the nerve to be naked on a show 4 Monsters (at least to start with). The first two teams were definitely skilled and resilient.
