What did you think think of the premiere episode of the eighth and final season? For those not familiar with the show, Dexter is a serial killer but he only kills other serial killers so that's OK (kinda). Dexter has an adopted sister Deb. Dexter is a blood splatter expert with the Miami police department. Deb WAS a detective there as well until this season. Now she's a private investigator who's doing lots of coke and screwing guys she's supposed to be bringing in.
Here's the basic formula of the show. Each episode consists of a murder that the police must solve. Dexter kills someone and almost gets caught. Deb cusses and cries a lot. The other members of the police department run around and try to solve the crime (but never quite get there). Each season has a "guest" serial killer that Dexter must dispatch with. My absolute favorite was Trinity. I'm still raving about John Lithgow's performance as the seriously creepy family man who liked to naked-snuggle with women in the tub before he killed them. EEEKKK.
At the beginning of season 7, Deb discovered Dexter's secret and struggled with what to do. She loves him (it seems a little too much at times) but should she turn him in? She killed Lieutenant La Guerta to protect Dexter at the end of last season. Deb was a mess before but now she's seriously screwed up. Deb's current refusal to talk to Dexter has put him in a downward spiral of his own. An emotionally unhinged Dexter is starting to make mistakes (he almost killed someone in a fit of road rage).
This week's episode introduces a psychiatrist named Dr Vogel (the "psychopath whisperer") who apparently knew Dexters father. She helped Harry devise the "code" for Dexter (ie only kill other serial killers). Interesting...we'll see how that storyline goes. And it looks like this season's serial killer removes part of his/her victim's brains (the part that controls empathy-- which serial killers apparently don't have).
Now seems like a good time to cast my bet for how the show should end. To have a fitting conclusion, Dexter must die. I think that would satisfy my need for justice and balance in the world. It could be at the hands of Deb or they might both be killed at the same time. I just hope there's an actual conclusion (yeah I'm talking about you Sopranos)! Let me know your thoughts on an appropriate ending.
Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). A solid start but not the totally suspenseful first episode I was hoping for. They really didn't do much with the aftermath of the Lieutenant's murder.
