Lost Girl Season 5 Episode 1 Review: Like Hell Part 1 (Season Premiere)

Thus begins the final season of "Lost Girl". The first half has already aired in Canada. I tried not to peek at what was to come (but I've only been partially successful).

For those of you new to the show, it's quite a bit to comprehend. Bo is an unaligned fae succubus. That means she's neither a dark nor a light fae (which is a no no). Her BFF Kenzi (a human) sacrificed herself to save Bo at the end of last season. Kenzi was taken to Valhalla. This usually means a person is dead but not necessarily on this show. Since Bo is a succubus, she gets around. She's had relationships with Dr Lauren Lewis (a human who is currently aligned with the dark fae) and Dyson (a wolfie fae). Tamsin (a Valkyrie) currently has a thing for Bo as well. See, I told ya it was complicated. See my previous reviews here for an overview: http://gmonster320.blogspot.com/search/label/Lost%20Girl

"Like Hell Part 1" opens with Bo climbing a rock cliff. Are we in the Grand Canyon? She sticks her hand into a giant bird's nest (I'd hate to see that bird) and pulls out a shoe. Its the Hel shoe that was hidden last season. Why it's there, I have no idea. Just roll with it. Anyway, Bo loses her grip and plummets to the ground. She's gets a nasty arm wound and is unconscious. Luckily (or not so luckily) three hikers pass by. But they're not the helpful kind of hikers. They're the "Deliverance" kind of hikers. Uh oh. Luckily Bo sucks the chi out of all three and heals herself. Bo 1, Inbreds 0.

Next she goes home but finds the other Hel shoe is missing from its hiding spot. Tamsin (who is eating everything in sight) has moved it. She finally tells Bo that Trick (Bo's grandpops) has it. Bo retrieves it and heads over to Dr Lauren's. Lauren is now the head of the Marquise Medical Center (named after the Morrigan). Remember the Morrigan had been made human after a romantic tryst with Lauren. Yes Lauren has a magical vagina. Yep you read that right. Is this a fun, crazy show or what? On a related note, since Lauren can make fae human, can she also make human fae? And if so, will she decide she wants to be dark fae?

Lauren Has Mad Skillz

But I digress. Lauren will monitor Bo after she puts on both shoes (in case there are problems). And trust me... there are ALWAYS problems. The last chick that had both shoes on was the French Lauren doppelganger who went on a murder spree and finally had to be put out of her misery. Lauren says she will need a little time to prepare. Bo cant wait and puts on the shoes. They dissolve into her feet. She then disappears. Bo, you could stand to learn a little patience.

Is This An Updated Motel 8?

Bo ends up in what appears to a swanky hotel. She meets Freyja (who is in charge of the place). The recently deceased either go up or down. Bo steals a maid's outfit (it is quite form fitting I might add) and goes looking for Kenzi. Luckily she presses the right button in the elevator thanks to Kenzie's obsession with chocolate.

Kenzi Does Make A Beautiful Bride

Bo finds Kenzi who seems to be doing well. Valhalla has it's perks. Kenzi is going to marry her long lost love Hale. Remember he was killed in an earlier season. Yep she's still dead but we wont dwell on the negative. Bo walks her down the aisle. Kenzi looks lovely in her wedding dress. But something is wrong. I didnt get if it wasnt really Hale or it was a trap or what. Anyway, Freyja says she sent Hale "back". Kenzi wants to be alive with her bestie.

Next Lauren goes to Bo and Tamsin's house (they're currently roommates).  Tamsin isnt much help. She has taken the Valkyrie oath which means no secrets or she will die (and since Tamsin is on her last life currently, she cant take any chances). Lauren STRONGLY encourages Tamsin to get with the program. Everyone else has made sacrifics except Tamsin. Since Tamsin cant spill her guts, she gives her journal (which was hidden in the couch) to Lauren.

This Scene Was Hilarious

Tamsin shuttles some dead fae to Valhalla. She encounters Freyja and her assistant Stacey. Tamsin gets a call and goes all "The Shining" on Kenzi (by chopping through her hotel room door with an ax). That was too funny! Kenzie flees out onto the window ledge. Bo grabs Tamsin by the throat and calms her down. Tamsin doesnt want to be evil, she just cant control herself. This is her job in Valhalla. She breaks down and tells Bo she is her family and doesnt want to give her to her father (who incidentally wants Bo to raise an army in Hell and take over the world). It's always something isnt it? I was hoping we'd had enough of Daddy Dearest after last season but I guess not.

This Wasnt What I Had In Mind

So Bo gets Kenzi's life back. The only tiny problem is Kenzi wakes up in her coffin... ya know...buried...under ground. Uh oh. People, you really should read the fine print on these contracts. Bo is back on the elevation heading presumably to see Daddy. Lauren and Dyson are at the gates to the underworld. Lauren has passed out after getting all Valkyrie faced and learning Kenzi is alive and in danger.

Dont Worry, We've Got This Covered

Favorite Quotes:
  • "Since we first met, you've saved me every single day in ways you can never understand, in ways that I barely understand. You just did and I just want you to be happy."- Bo to Kenzi.
  • "Here's Tammmiiiiii"- Tamsin to Kenzie as she tries to break down her door with an ax. That was a  fun "The Shining" reference.
  • "Eat a sack of tits."- Tamsin to Lauren. No, I didnt make that up...its really dialogue. Who in the work even thought that up? Is this show great or what?
  • Freyja: "Why in the name of my glorious afterlife were you fondling my flower." Bo: "Well that's a great setup for a joke."
  • "Eyes both brown and blue, virtuous yet lustful, heart both strong and gentle, neither dark not light but both. She is yours."- the guy on the blue phone to Tamsin. He's obviously talking about Bo.
  • "You want me, here I come."- Bo while she's in the elevator heading to see her Pops.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). A good start. I'm glad Kenzi is back. I have no idea where they'll go this season but I hope they focus on the relationships between the main characters (since that's what keeps me coming back).
