Sleepy Hollow Episode 8-9 Recaps: Necromancer and Sanctuary

I was told there would be cable and wi fi in my cell...

Here's what happened on the last two episodes of "Sleepy Hollow". My, how time flies. There are only four episodes to go until the season finale on January 20. Luckily SH will be back for a season 2 so don't anyone starting crying.

Episode 8 "Necromancer":

When we last saw HH (Headless Horseman) he was being held in a chamber designed by Thomas Jefferson. He is contained with UV lights and hexes (from hex candles provided by Katrina's coven). The Hessians are planning to cut the power to the chamber and release him. The show's title comes from Officer Andy being Moloch's Necromancer. Andy sold his soul and must obey all of Moloch's commands (even though he's still sweet on Abbie). Andy comes in handy when talking to HH because... HEEELLLLOOO... the man has no head.

I'm glad to see Abbie's sister Jenny and Captain Irving playing more prominent roles. Jennie knows a lot of cool stuff.

And in the big reveal... the Horseman went against Moloch's wishes and started a personal vendetta to kill Ichabod because he loves Katrina... because the Horseman is really Abraham (Katrina's former fiancé and Ichy's former friend). And as you recall, Katrina is being held in some purgatory-type place. It seems Moloch is using her as a carrot to get HH to do what he wants. I'm not sure that makes sense but it's "Sleepy Hollow", so just roll with it.

Fun stuff:
  • Abbie teaches Ichy how to fist bump.
  • A redneck hunter that was actually a German Hessian. That was a fun surprise.
  • Is it just me or did those Moloch minions look a lot like the cave dwelling creatures from "Descent".
  • Ichabod says Jefferson designed the cell to hold demons as "a product no doubt of trying to reason with the French." Haaa keep those French jokes rolling. We don't have enough of those on horror shows.
  • "A dead guy, a mental patient, and a time traveler from the Revolution.”- Irving's description of his teammates.

Episode 9 "Sanctuary":

This is Sleepy Hollow's Thanksgiving episode. Abbie and Ichabod's search for a missing heiress leads them to Fredericks Manors (which is haunted). There they spent most of the episode running from room to room. It turns out Katrina went to the house to give birth because the house had a protection spell around it. Members of the coven were under attack from Moloch and some twig monster. I'm all about haunted houses but couldn't you make the baddy something scarier than a big twig? How about vampires? Vampires are way scarier.

Anyway, Ichy didn't know he had a son so that is touching. And it seems Abbie is a descendent of Grace Dixon (who helped delivery Katrina's baby) so their lives have been intertwined (no twig joke intended) for many years. I really like that idea. It reminds me of "Once Upon A Time" where there are multitudes of ways everyone is connected throughout history.

In the B storyline Captain Irving and Jenny are getting cozier (well if you call bickering over missing firearms cozy). We meet his daughter Macy. She is in a wheelchair but we don't know why. Apparently he has not been a very good father since his ex (Cynthia) is threatening to take custody if he doesn't shape up.

In the final scene Abbie and Ichy share a touching moment together. Sometimes we make our own families and those ties are just as strong as the blood ones.

Fun stuff:
  • Ichy is confused by the non-Scottish food at McDonalds.
  • The billionaire heiress is very perplexing (one billion dollars is a lot of money to Ichabod and to me).
  • The pilgrims did not eat turkey. They ate venison.
  • When Ichy stuck his hand in the crawl space and pulled out Twig Monster instead of Abbie, that made me laugh.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). Even with the "monster of the week" episodes, I'm still very much enjoying "Sleepy Hollow".
