Nan Madol
I definitely enjoyed both of these episodes. They had new information that I had not heard previously.
Map of structures at Nan Madol
In "Aliens and Forbidden Islands" a great deal of time was spent on Nan Midol (which is a series of 90 something man made islands in Micronesia that is considered a National Historic Site). Very heavy stones were used to create these islands and no one knows how this was accomplished. One hypothesis has been "auditive levitation" which means uses sound frequencies to move large objects. Per Wikipedia, according to Pohnpeian legend, Nan Madol was constructed by twin sorcerers Olisihpa and Olosohpa from the mythical Western Katau, or Kanamwayso. The brothers arrived in a large canoe seeking a place to build an altar so that they could worship Nahnisohn Sahpw, the god of agriculture. In legend, these brothers levitated the huge stones with the aid of a flying dragon: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nan_Madol The islanders considered Nan Midol to be haunted. It was know as the "City of Ghosts". Anyone who visited there was supposed to meet an untimely death.
- Disappearing Island were also mentioned. Examples being Sandy Island and Hy-Brasil. Sandy Island- some people think Sandy Island was a mistake made by map makers hundreds of years ago or might actually be located somewhere else: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2012/nov/22/sandy-island-missing-google-earth
- Hy-Brasil is a mythical island from Irish folklore: http://www.museumofhoaxes.com/hoax/archive/permalink/lost_island_of_hi_brazil
Ark of the Covenant
In "Aliens and The Lost Ark" the team explorers the possible origins of the Ark of the Covenant. The Ark of the Covenant was created by Moses per God's specifications. It contained several items: the Ten Commandments, Aaron's staff (which turned into a serpent) and some manna. Was the Ark really some sort of nuclear powered energy and communication source? A number of suggestions point to this.
No one was allowed to look at the Ark or touch it or they would die. Those that took care of the Ark (Moses, Aaron and their descendants) had to wear special clothing. The Breastplate of Judgment contained 12 precious stones. The gemstones supposedly played an important role in communicating with God via the Ark. Each priest also had to have a rope tied around his leg. That way if he died, he could be pulled out (since no one could rescue him or they too would be killed).
Some have theorized that the Ark is a capacitor (with the two cherubs being transmitters and the gold plating on the box being a conductor). God apparently appeared between the two angels in what was known as the "mercy seat". This might have in fact been electrical energy or something else that they were not familiar with.
The Ark disappears from the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem after the Babylonia invasion in 586 BC. Where did it go? Different hypotheses are presented including Japan and Ethiopia. I had heard of the speculation about Ethiopia previously. There are a number of Jews there (indicating someone immigrated years ago). The priests who supposedly guard the Ark are sworn to secrecy. Anyone guarding the relic has a very short lifespan. One was suffering from several cataracts and said the Ark had caused them. The Ark of the Covenant is one of the most sought after religious relics of all times and far more than just a box that contained the Ten Commandments. The biblical stories surrounding the Ark speak of a device with divine powers that was able to produce food, take down stonewalls, kill those that come in contact with it, and provide direct communication to God. Are these stories mere myth? Or did the Ark of the Covenant possess extraordinary powers? What happened to this incredible relic? Could it still be hidden? Are we getting close to a rediscovery–and reactivation–of the Ark?
