The Returned Episodes 4-5 Recaps: Victor and Serge et Toni

I am still LOVING this show. It's so different from anything else on TV. Also if you haven't already, pay close attention to the opening credits. That kind of attention to detail is one of the reasons this show is so refreshing. Also the casting is spot on. Could Camille and Lena look any more alike (even if they were actually related)? I'm not sure I could do justice to providing an overview so below are the ones from Wikipedia. I will add a few thoughts to ponder though:
  • What I got was that the dam burst previously and that's there's an old town under there, correct? What is the significance of the dam? Obviously it means something. Madame Costs's husband threw himself off of it. The water level in the reservoir is lowering. There are hundreds of animals who drowned themselves in it or face what?
  • Victor finally speaks. I was beginning to think he was going through the whole season without saying anything. Victor is definitely the creepiest returnee.  I think he is the key to everything though. Why did he appear on the road before the bus went over the cliff? He also is responsible for Julie's next door neighbor (the Cat Lady) killing herself. He would like to see revenge on Pierre for killing his family.
  • Is Julie alive or dead? She thinks she's dead. Maybe that's why she's so attached to Victor. And I still don't understand the scene her, the scissors and Serge. Was that just a hallucination? Serge is of course back but we don't see any scenes where he tries to make contact with her. She does seen him while riding the bus but he doesn't see her. Is this yet another hallucination caused by Victor?
  • Didn't Lucy's wounds heal quickly? I'm thinking she might be a returnee also. In fact,, I'm thinking everyone in that town might be dead and they just don't know it yet.
  • Do the returnees being hungry all the time have anything to do with anything?
  • Don't anyone go in the basement with Pierre. He's more creepy than the undead people. He said "it's happened once before" and that its a sign of Armageddon. If he's not talking about Jesus being resurrected, is he talking about himself.
  • What connection does Mr Costa have to everyone? He was mentioned at the funeral. He apparently worked on building the dam. He taught Camille in school. And when he saw Madame Costa again he tied her up, burnt down the house with her in it and then threw himself off the dam.

Check out the series of pictures with each character looking into the lake. This one has Julie holding a bear with Victor's hand reaching up. Creepy stuff.

Episode 4 "Victor"
Julie is devastated when her ex-partner Laure takes Victor away from her to a local shelter run by Pierre. While there, Victor realises that Pierre is one of the two men that burgled his house when he was shot, thirty years ago. Thomas uses his home surveillance equipment to watch Adèle, who has reignited her relationship with Simon, and who introduces him to his daughter, pretending he is an "angel". Léna is rushed to hospital with a wound on her back that appears to have suddenly expanded from a scar left when her father Jérôme hit her a year before. Léna soon leaves the hospital, and still faint from her wound, is picked up by Serge. The water level at the reservoir continues to drop, but engineers can find no faults in the dam.

Episode 5 "Serge et Toni"
Victor leaves the shelter with Madame Costa, and discuss their experiences as Revenants with each other. Serge holds back his killing instincts to nurse Léna back to health. Adèle wavers when she discovers Simon killed himself, and he is devastated when she and their daughter decide not to leave town with him; Thomas, returning home, shoots Simon dead (This is the second time Simon's been killed for anyone that's counting). Victor returns to confront Pierre, who begs the boy's forgiveness; Victor decides not to take revenge. Divers at the reservoir looking for faults find hundreds of dead, floating animals at the bottom of the lake, while post-mortems reveal they were running away from something and instead preferred to drown.

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). Still LOVING this show. With only eight episodes it's going to be over WAY too soon.
