The Blacklist Episode 10 Recap: Who's (Not) Your Daddy (Mid Season Finale)

This is the second part of  "Anslo Garrick (Number 16)". When we last saw Red he was held up in his cozy cell with a badly injured Ressler. Garrick and the Wild Bunch (which is still a really stupid name for a group of mercenaries) had control of the FBI's black ops site. They had already killed Luli and it looked like Dembe was a goner too.

But it's a fake out. Dembe is not killed. The Bunch instead capture Liz and threaten to shoot her. Liz is Red's one weak spot. He threatens Ressler who gives up the code. It's "Romeo".  The FBI storms the building but Garrick escapes with Liz and Red in tow. Liz is able to escape thanks to some creative use of defibrillator equipment. She then rolls out of the moving ambulance. I can tell you from personal experience that you don't just get up and walk away after that.

Back at FBI HQ the head honcho Diane shows up and she's not happy. She's ready to shut down the whole operation. They discover there is a mole in the agency.  Who could it be (as I mentally tick off all the characters in the show)? Meanwhile Liz is at home with the always suspicious hubby Tom.

It turns out that the mole is calling the apple eating guy next door (who is spying on Liz and Tom during their sexy times). Liz goes next door and kills him. Previously while in the ambulance Red had given Liz a cryptic message  "The Emissary Hotel Mr. Kaplan". Liz calls the hotel and asks for him.  Kaplan (who is actually an older woman) arrives and helps with cleanup. She tells Liz to check Dead Guy's car for clues.

And back with the baddies we learn the Garrick has captured Red for another mysterious person (so he's just a hired henchman).  The big baddie is none other than Alan Alda. He says the higher ups want to make sure Red does not talk about some big secret. Red hasn't said anything to the FBI. Alan Alda leaves but instructs Garrick not to kill Red (which is a real bummer). Instead Red stabs Garrick in the next with something. When the FBI finds the site (thanks to Liz locating it), Red is gone and a dead Garrick is on the floor.

Back at home Tom and Liz argue about her quitting her job.  She looks at the burned bunny again. Red calls Liz. He says he must go away for a while but if she needs him, he's already around.  And the moment everyone has been waiting for. Liz asks Red if he is her father. He pauses and then says "no". I don't believe him though. Why would he take this much interest in her if he wasn't? He also says "be careful of your husband” (whatever that means).

Favorite quotes:

  • "The people I represent, they’re nervous… We could have killed you every day for the past two decades. But we know what you have, and we know what will happen with it if you turn up dead. And in exchange, we trust that our secret will remain secret.”- Alan Alda
  • “Wherever I am, whatever I’m doing, if you are in need, I will be there.”- Red to Liz

Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). A good episode but I'm still not "all in" with this show. It will return on 1/13/14.
