Continuum Season 4 Episode 1 Review: Back To The Future Sorta (Season Premiere)

"Continuum" is another great import from our neighbors to the north. It began it's final season in the US this week. The show has been moved by SyFy to Fridays at 11 ET (which may be a little late for some viewers). With only six episodes total in season 4 there isn't much time to wrap things up.

"Lost Hours" begins with Brad activating a beacon to the future. At first things look good but then the power goes out. Soldiers from the future began chasing both. Yep those Terminator looking suits are way cool. Kiera uses her cloaking skills which work for a while but then she's blown through a truck.

Kiera wakes up in 2080. The nurse tells she's been in a coma for several years. Kiera is reunited with her son Sam in a tearful reunion. I guess the show's over then. But wait one second...she's now back in 2013. Her CMR has gone into simulation mode after the battle due to some head trauma.

Kiera tells Aec has fulfilled her mission and stopped Liber8 (or became buddies with them). Again she wants Alec to send her home to 2077. In this version of time, Matthew Kellog has control of Alec's company. Alec needs his tech in order to send Kiera back to her family.

Meanwhile Emily has been released from jail. Good Alec killed Bad Alec last season and took over his fabulous flat. Carlos is still hanging around looking confused.

Kiera tries to infiltrate Marcellus and the future soldiers but is thrown off the roof. We think they'll shoot her but Jasmine Garza comes in guns a blazing and saves the day. Oh and Emily is kidnapped...again. Curtis Chen visits Garza and tells her Liber8 must take out Kellog before he turns evil.

In the finale scene, Kellog gets a holographic message from future Kellogg.

I don't profess to know the minutia about the show but here are some good charts to help us keep track of what happened previously:

Timeline #1: At the end of the season we learn that Old Alec sent Liber8 back in time to try to shop himself.

Timeline #2: We are introduced to Freelancers.

Timeline #3: We end up with two Alecs and two Kiera's in the some time line for a while. Mental Note: Fighting with yourself is hard work.

Timeline #4: Here comes Brad. Too bad he cant remember what he's supposed to be doing. Oh he killed Green Kiera. That's going to be rough on their relationship.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). A good solid start on the last season. I was worried for a sec when Kiera woke up in the future that the three previous seasons were just a hallucination. If so, there were going to be some majorly unhappy fans. But no worries. It was just a psych.

"Continuum" continues to follow their episode naming convention. All season 1 episodes had "time" in their title. All season 2 had "second". All season 3 had "minute" and all season 4 have "hour".

Rachel Nichols continues to be compelling as Kiera. I like her new hairdo this season. Kyra Zagorsky joins the cast as one of the future soldiers (which is great because she was one of the best things about "Helix").

Since there are so few episodes I might keep up with "Continuum" until the end. I had previously abandoned reviewing it weekly because to be honest, it made my head hurt. There were too many different time lines to keep track of (red, green, etc).

  1. So Alec is going to find a way to jump timelines? Can he even do that?

Those mech guys are idiots, I'm not sure if they know what they're doing.
