Minority Report: Episode 1: Did The Precogs Predict This Flop? (Series Premiere)
"Minority Report" is based on a 2002 movie of the same name starting Tom Cruise, directed by Stephen Spielberg, and based on a Philip K. Dick short story. I really liked the original movie so wanted to give the Fox TV series a look.
To recap the film's plot, in the future crime is eliminated thanks to the help of Precogs. They are three children (Agatha, Dash, and Arthur) who are able to read people's thoughts. A police division known as "Precrime" is established to round up offenders and jail them BEFORE they commit offenses. It is later discovered that the precogs predictions may be false positives. Thus many people are unfairly imprisoned. The program is abandoned. The prisoners are released and the precogs are free to live their lives without government interference.
The TV series picks up some ten years later. In 2065, crime is again skyrocketing. Since the precogs are no longer in use, police must rely on other means to catch the bad guys. Detective Lara Vega heads to a crime scene and uses some high tech gadgets to get the job done. She is later approached by Dash (who apparently wants to keep working). We also meet Lara's evil boss. .
Grade: 3 Monsters (out of 5). I was really looking forward to "Minority Report" but given it's current state, I think I'll pass. The characters are not compelling (although I like Meagan Good as Lara). I found Dash (Stark Sands) to be boring. And is it just me or was Wilmer overacting to the max?
Without the precogs, the show is basically a crime procedural set in the future. Perhaps someone should have consulted them before creating the show. My guess is they would have predicted a flop.
