Fear The Walking Dead Episode 4 Review: Zero Zombies!

"Not Fade Away" finds the Clark/Manawa/Salazar brood nine days after the lights went out. They are settling into life inside a military "safe zone". Travis jogs around the neighborhood. Nick takes a dip in the pool. Chris takes some video. Alicia adds a do-it-yourself-tattoo to her arm to remember Matt. Nick steals morphine from a dying man. Ofelia makes out with one of the soldiers in hopes of getting medication for her mother. Travis and Madison have sexy times in the car

Just Chilaxing

Madison escapes the compound and finds dead bodies everywhere. She sees a house on the hill that answers her morse code flashlight message. Who is up there? Is it Tobias? We hope not since Travel later tells the military about it (and it appears they killed the person).

Madison returns home to find Nick has been indulging his drug habit again. She beats the ever living crap out of him. I mean physically beats him-- not just a tongue lashing. While I'm not in support of beating your children, he really needed a reality check. Unfortunately it appears to be too little, too late.

Don't Blame Obamacare!

In the most exciting events of the episode, the military invades their house in middle of the night and forcibly takes Griselda and Nick. They will be transported to a "medical facility". I think that means they're going to be killed. Doctor-Whats-Her-Name asks Liza to join them saying the need more medical personnel. She reluctantly leaves Chris. This isnt going to be good. Everyone knows the military cant be trusted during the zombie apocalypse-- especially soldiers that spend their days golfing. Fortunately Daniel knows the score (unlike trusting Travis) and tries to give Madison the scoop.

I Dont Get Paid Enough For This Man

Madison blames Liza for Nick being taken away. Say what? Oh course, it would be a bummer if her last interaction with her son was pummeling him. And is Madison drinking? I thought they referenced earlier that she was a recovering alcoholic. If so, she may be taking a little ride soon too.

Favorite Quotes:

  • "I was standing in the river fishing, just a boy and I found them (all the men in his village). All of them. All at once...If it happens, it will happen quickly. You must be prepared."- Daniel to Madison.
  • "Come on man, free medical, care of the US military."- soldier to Nick.
  • "You guys are the lucky ones. Count your blessings. Be nice so I dont have to shoot ya."- Lt Moyers to the citizens.
  •  "Men do these things not because of evil. They do evil because of fear. And at that moment, I realized my father is a food for believing there is a difference."-- Daniel to Madison.

Grade: 2 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). I was seriously disappointed in "Not Fade Away". Why? Did I mention there were ZERO zombies?  I really want to like you "Fear The Waking Dead' but you're starting to lose me. And from the responses on social media, I'm not the only one. I understand you have to set the mood and establish characters but a zombie show really should have some zombies. I'm not asking many. Maybe one aimlessly roaming around in the background. Anything?

  1. 9 days went by? the show is moving too fast, they should be doing 1 day per episode, unless the zombie apocalypse would happen slower in la? that doesn't make sense. did they not watch the 1st season of twd? this felt more like "28 weeks later". i don't like the idea of the ebul government. they shouldn't have had the military show up so soon. that was a huge mistake. i don't think a zombie apocolypse would happen so fast nor would the government be so organized to create a "gated community" *rolls eyes* so quickly.

  2. Thanks for your comment. I agree with ya 100%. I was looking forward to watching LA descend into chaos for extended episodes but all we got so far was one puny little riot. If FTWD doesnt step up it's game, I fear they are going to lose a lot of viewers. With only two episodes left (6 total) I dont have high hopes that things will end on a stellar note this season.
