This Is Not As Refreshing As It Looks
Sure they were burning witches long before Increase got to town, but he takes it to whole 'nother level. In this week's episode entitled "Departures", Daddy Mather strolls down to the whore house. He might be a happier person (and easier to get along with) if he partook of their "services". Cotton and Gloriana are there and in a compromising position. Luckily they get a little advanced warning and Cotton hides under a bed. Daddy busts in and sees a Bible. Gloriana says it belongs to her. Sorry, no one is buying that.
Next, Increase heads downstairs to badger the proprietor of the establishment-- Mab. She is holding her own until Mather finds her hidden stash of crystals (or conjuring rocks) above the fireplace. Uh oh. The other witches are worried that she'll give them up. The town has a good old fashioned witch dunking. Everyone turns out. Well it's probably the same crowd that shows up for the hangings. After almost drowning, Mab finally names someone as a witch. It is... Gloriana.
Cotton is distraught. Increase makes him disrobe Gloriana to look for signs of witchcraft. Actually he's just a prev and wants to see her naked. They find no signs. Increase still exiles Gloriana from town. Will she and Cotton ever see each other again? Mab is back in a jail cell. She takes poison and dies instead of giving anyone else up. Way to keep your mouth shut Mab!
Meanwhile Mary sends George to Boston with Issac under the guise of getting him medical treatment. Issac does not feel inclines to help George since he previously branded him as a fornicator.The carriage crashes. George is thrown free. He slashes his belly in order to pull out Todd the Toad (ie the familiar). Uh oh. Now that George can speak, there's going to be trouble. Somehow Todd hops back to Mary's house. I dont know how that works. They cast a spell over Todd. Tituba heads into the woods to find George (right ahead of Increase). Luckily that Weird Woods Guy (Petrus) finds George first and gives him a potent which knocks him out cold. Just then, Tituba and Increase's party arrive. George is taken to Increase's home to recuperate.
In other news, Anne is still suspicious of her father. He's definitely not a spy in his stylish Pilgrim hat. John and Mary are still lusting after each other. What has became of Todd The Toad? He's my favorite character.
Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). Things are definitely heating up thanks to Daddy Increase. He'll rid the town of witches even if he has to kill everyone in the process. Are there only two episodes left in this season?
