Rizzoli And Isles Season 5 Episode 2 Recap: Saying Goodbye Way Too Soon

eonline.com

I dont regularly review "Rizzoli & Isles" but wanted to since this is the farewell episode to Lee Thompson Young (who tragically committed suicide last year). How does a show deal with such a sensitive topic?

In "Goodbye" the team prepared to eulogize Detective Barry Frost who was killed in a car accident.  Also, in the case of the week, a women covered in blood arrives at the police station but she has no memory of what occurred or how she got there.

Is she being honest? Korsak thinks she's faking it. Thanks to some top notch forensic work they find Indian food in her teeth. Off they go on a tour of restaurants. Then she remembers she was a teacher. They search her home. Lily regains her memory. Her boyfriend Toby stole money from a drug dealer. He was killed in front of Lily. She was in such shock that she entered a fugue state. Boston's finest catches the culprit in 42 minutes and reunites Lily with her family. Case closed.

Everyone is mourning Frost's lost in their own way. Maura has a breakdown in the parking garage but Jane remains strong. Let us not forgot Jane is also pregnant so has lots of hormones coursing through her veins.

Jane gives a touching speech at Frost's funeral. I'm glad his father (Admiral Frost) was able to get there in time. Jane says "I really loved how he made me laugh, and I will miss that infectious smile and the joy that he brought to every day. So, in this moment when it feels like there is none, here is the good news: death may have taken Barry, but it can't take our memories of him, those wonderful and perfect and beautiful memories. Those, thank God, are ours to keep." Everyone is understandably very emotional.

When Jane arrives home she gets a post card that Barry mailed her from San Diego before he was killed. She finally loses it and begins to weep.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). A sensitive handling of a very difficult topic. The show was that much more powerful because they were really mourning Lee instead of the fictitious Barry. RIP Lee Thompson Young. I hope you found some of the peace and comfort that alluded you in this life.
