"The Last Ship" premiered on TNT last nite (Sunday at 9 ET). The premise is that a virus has quickly spread throughout the world killing most of its inhabitants. The US government has been crippled and it is feared that most of the crew's family members are dead. Our last hope is the destroyer USS Nathan James. The good news is it has a virologist Dr Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra) on board who is working on a cure. The arctic duck study was just a ruse to get on the boat. The not-so-good news is Dr Scott's assistant is actually a Russian spy (and is secretly calling them with the ship's coordinates).
The cast is stellar. Hello Captain Tom Chandler (ie Eric Dane from "Greys Anatomy"). But the story is somewhat of a drag since most of the "action" takes place off screen. We do see a good helicopter vs snowmobile battle. But in my opinion, the best part about post-apocalyptic shows is seeing the action at ground level. Maybe we'll see some of that later.
Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). "The Last Ship" may not be my cup of tea. If you like your adventures on the high seas, it might be worth a look. I'll check back intermittently to see how's it going. I hear it picks up in later episodes.
