The noose continues to tighten around Mary, Tituba, Mercy, and Hale in episodes 9 ("Children Be Afraid") and 10 ("The House Of Pain").

Mary convinced Issac to take a tonic to George in order to "relieve his suffering". That doesnt work so Tituba sends her familiar (ie a big hairy tarantula) to crawl down George's throat. Ewwww. I would rather have Todd the Toad.

Mercy (who has always been jealous of Tituba) tells Increase that Tituba is a witch. In Mercy's defense she was protected Mary. And even though Mary drank the potent in front of Increase to prove it wasnt poison, she's still on the fast track for burning and/or hanging.

Increase redecorates the whorehouse and turns it into the "House of Pain". Sounds like a fun place to have a party. Dude, you might want to keep one of the hookers around. Then you'd be a lot happier and stop torturing people.

Anne is being her usual inquisitive self and puts on her father's mask. She is transported to the woods. Luckily the local Indians think she's crazy and leave her alone (for the most part). And I bet Anne stays away from masks from here on out. She should be glad she didnt end up in another dimension (instead of just in the woods outside of town). And why teleport to a place you can walk to anyway? That's just lazy.

Mrs Magistrate sends Hale out to find Anne. Is Anne's not back by nightfall there will be hell to pay (and it's not the kind that he's looking for). Hale approaches John (who is doing his daily shirtless log chopping). They head to the woods. Drunk Cotton is there trying to off himself. Dont give Daddy the satisfaction. Hang around to be a thorn in his flesh. Cotton climbs a tree and pees on John. I was just saying to myself yesterday that we dont see enough scenes of men peeing on each other... NOT!

Meanwhile back in town, Mary wants to have a heart to heart with Mercy about why she betrayed Tituba and put them all in danger. And by that, I mean Mary will probably pull off her head and stomp on it. But Mercy vanishes and/or becomes a spider. I'm not sure. I really hate spiders.

Increase is doing horrific things to Tituba. We dont actually SEE the torture but we do hear him describe all the devices. They have such names as skull crusher, tongue ripper, that pear thing...eeekkkk. The worst part is that these are actual implements used on poor souls in the Middle Ages and after. I really appreciate you 21st century!!!

Increase tells Tituba that she is protected someone who would not do the same for her. She says she will not forsake her one true love. Does she mean Mary? I'm thinking she means Mary. If so I can hear a million fanfiction writers hard at work. Tituba whispers something in Increase's ear but we dont hear what she says.

Hale and Alden are still in the woods. Luckily John speaks the Indian's language. A shaken Anne is retrieved. When they return to town, everyone is waiting. Tituba has named John as the witch. Uh oh. Well at least she's protecting Mary and, let's be honest, that's all I really care about. Mary is of course horrified because she still loves John (even though she pretends she doesnt).

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). I hate Increase more and more with each new show. But he does make an excellent baddy. There is only three episodes left in the season. What will happen next week? Will anyone die? There arent that many main characters on this show to off. Will Anne become a witch? I get the feeling she has something big up her sleeve. Will we see Todd the Toad again? I really miss him. What is the Kanima about anyway? Is he the devil? I'm confused.
