Breaking Bad Seasons 1-2 Overview: The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions

In honor of "Breaking Bad's return, I'm doing recaps of the previous seasons. The second half of the fifth (and final) season airs Sunday on AMC at 10 PM ET. We have eight more episodes to look forward to until the end of the series.

Main characters:
  • Walter White- a mild mannered high school chemistry teacher. He has terminal lung cancer and devises a plan to create/ sell crystal meth so his family will be taken care of financially after he's gone.
  • Skylar White- Walt's wife. When we first meet Skylar, she is pregnant with their second child. First born son Walt Jr. has cerebral palsy,
  • Jesse Pinkman- was a former student of Walt's. They become drug partners.
  • Hank Schrader- a DEA agent, he is unhappily married to Skylar's sister.
  • Maria Schrader- Skylar's kleptomaniac sister.

Season 1 only had seven episodes. We meet Walt and are introduced to his world. He leads a pretty miserable existence. He's 50, has terminal lung cancer, his wife is pregnant, he cant make ends meet as a chemistry teacher so has to work part time at a car wash.

While doing a ride-along with his brother-in-law Hank (who is a DEA agent), he sees his former student Jesse. He later contacts Jesse and they go into business together. Walt cooks the meth in an RV and Jesse is in charge of selling it. But things aren't going as quickly as Walt needs them to.

Walt tries to sell his meth to a drug distributor Crazy 8. He eventually kills Crazy 8 and his accomplice. Walt reluctantly agrees to start experimental chemotherapy (which is what he's using the drug money for). Walt and Jesse steal methyamine (the key ingredient in crystal met) so they can sell larger quantities to Tuco (who replaced Crazy 8).

Walt's drug dealer persona is "Heisenberg". Walt is initially a good man doing a bad thing (dealing drugs) for a good purpose (providing financial support for his family after he's dead).

Season 2 had 13 episodes. Walt and Jesse are kidnapped by Tuco (who is seriously crazy). They try to poison him but that doesnt work. Jesse is close to being killed but they finally escape right ahead of the DEA arriving.  Hank kills Tuco in a shoot out. He's later promoted for his bravery but as we all know he's not that brave. Hank begins to suffer panic attacks.

There is a recurring storyline about Eliot (Walt's old partner) and his wife Gretchen (Walt's old lover) but it wasn't very interesting. Walter hires a crooked lawyer, Saul Goodman, to help them with their drug operation. Saul finds Gus Fring (a drug dealer masquerading as a restaurant owner). Gus gives Walt $1.2 million for 38 pounds of crystal meth.

Walt finds out, much to his surprise, that his terminal cancer appears to be in remission. Skylar knows Walt is up to something. He continually lies to her and even missed the birth of their daughter. She wants a separation.

Jessie hooks up with his landlord's daughter Jane. She was a recovering addict until she got together with Jesse. Both start doing drugs again. Walt lets Jane choke on her own vomit and does nothing to help her (it must be noted that she was blackmailing him though). Walt tries to get Jesse into rehab. Jane's father is an air traffic control. After Jane's death he accidentally lets two planes crash into each other killing all aboard. A pink and white teddy bear falls from the sky and lands in the White's pool. So continues Walt's slide down the slippery slope to Hell.

What we learned from seasons 1-2:
  • If you're going to dissolve a body with hydrochloride acid, use plastic bins and not a bathtub (especially one on the second floor).
  • Gassing people in an RV is harder than it looks.
  • When cooking meth it's important to take off all your clothes.
  • Interacting with drug dealers is dangerous.
  • There is actually some real world uses for those chemistry classes I took.
  • If an ATM is propped up, do not stick your head under it (especially if your wife is pissed at you).
  • If you see a head on a turtle's back coming your way, you should run immediately.
  • As a public service, please do not upset air traffic controllers.
Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). A great show with excellent writing, acting and some truly shocking scenes.
