The Bridge Episodes 5-7 Recaps: The Beast, ID and Destino

"The Bridge" is one of those shows that I don't feel compelled to catch each week but when I do, I  wonder why I'm not watching it more often. When we last visited their world, Maria had just been rescued from the desert, Ruiz had been beaten up, and after lots of hinting to the contrary, Sideburns Man (Steve Linder) was not the real killer.

The actual killer turns out to be, cue the suspenseful music, Jackson Childress, a crazy who wrote a book called "The Dialectics of El Paso del Norte".  Sonya and Marco eventually track him down where they find evidence of his "missions". Nothing like leaving a big giant map of your activities for the police to find. They (along with Hank and Mustache Man Cooper) get in a gun battle with him. While in mid sentence as Manny is expounded on his insights regarding the bone saw and the picture at the dentist, his face is shot off.  That was pretty freaky. Jack also shots Sonya. Luckily her bulletproof vest saves her life but the impact leaves a nasty bruise. The last scene with her staring at herself in the mirror was a powerful one.

Now that they have the killer, what will happen in the next six episodes?  Uh, not so fast. Do we REALLY know for sure he's the ONE, and if so, is he the only one responsible for all the carnage? It seems a little too quick and easy for my taste. Frye has his doubts. Sonya (who is trusting her gut for a change) has her doubts. Marco may be trying to throw everyone off track of the real killer. Is he a dirty cop? I guess in this show  it's all relative. I have no idea who the REAL killer is at this point and am highly suspicious of everyone (including Hank, Cooper, Alma's boyfriend, and Dead Stokes). I also don't trust Sonya's fish.

Other happenings:

  • Charlotte shows Ray (the himbo) the tunnel to Mexico. In a later episode she asks him during sex if he can be trusted. Uh, the answer would be "no"!
  • Sonya's Aspergers is still out in full force. She goes to dinner at Marco's house with his family. She says the food doesn't taste good and hands Macro his wallet from Charlotte's house (whom he had an affair with). She seems to mellow in later episodes though when she tries to save Gina (after she's shot).
  • In a related note, some people has suggested that Cooper is the killer. We do know that Gina's father, Peter, was the therapist for many law enforcement types. If it was him wouldn't Gina have said "the beast" is a guy with a big mustache (instead of describing his eyes)? When she was dying she told Sonya that she got the eyes right. Based on that, I don't think it's Cooper (unless he has a fake mustache). However, Hank also visited Peter previously. Could he be "the beast"? That would be a big stab in the gut.
  • That opening scene in episode 7 with Graciela and Ray in the car was a shocker. Is oral sex with the drug boss standard operating procedure? Wouldn't a firm handshake work just as well? I know I would prefer it. On the other hand, you go Graciela girl! It's about time a woman got what she wanted.
  • We find out more about Sony's sister's death. Her sister was raped and strangled when Sonya was 15 (and she had to identify the body). Hank shot the killer (Jim Dobbs) leaving him mentally incapacitated. Sonya goes to visit him in prison. Hank helped her back then and has taken Sonya under his wing every since.
  • We also find out that Marco and Fausto go way back. Their fathers started a business together (I assume drug) but they each took opposite paths.
  • Marco goes home to talk to his wife Alma. She threw him out for cheating... again. He was staying at Sonya's house but of course nothing happened.  Alma (who is pregnant) is having an affair so I don't know why her feathers are all ruffled.
  • Adriana and Frye are in Mexico investigating the case. It's a scary place as is evident when they find a dead man tied to a pole with like 50 knives stuck in him.
  • Frye destroys his extensive stash of alcohol and drugs. Dude, you cant flush all that stuff down the toilet. It will make all the fish high. Frye eventually has a seizure (I assume caused by drug withdrawal) and collapses on the floor. Is he dead?
  • Linder is still trying to rescue girls. This time it's Fausto Galvan's girlfriend Sara Vega which could really get him killed. Sara may be an undercover cop though. Something is up with her.
  • What's up with all the beads?
  • Favorite quotes: "All institutions eat themselves eventually"- Jack to Sonya. "I'm not a messenger, I'm a conduit"- Linder
  • I had forgotten how dusty this show is. I need to take a shower after watching it.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5).  "The Bridge" is not easy to follow but it's worth the effort.
