The episode opens with Lady Jayne Wetherby fighting some vampires on a VERY dark train (I could barely see anything). She dispatches with everyone except a vampire who escapes by jumping off the back of the train. Oh great, now he's loose in London. Said vampire shows up at Dracula's house. We find out his name is Josef and Dracula is his maker.
Hmmm, what to do about Jayne being a vampire hunter? Should he kill her? No, the Order will just recruit another one. Dracula devises a plan. "I will take away the one thing from her that no man ever could." Is that supposed to be her trust? OK whatever. That seems like a lot of work to me.
Josef promptly moves in with Dracula. He has lots of opinions about everything-- including that Mina and Dracula's long dead wife bear a striking resemblance to each other and that Lady Jayne should be killed. Don't you hate it when house guests take over the place?
Meanwhile Lucy is planning Mina and Jonathan's engagement party. Grayson has volunteered the use of his mansion. Lucy is arranging everything since Mina is bored by the details. There is a tearful scene between Lucy and Mina. Lucy has it bad for Mina (and poor Mina doesn't have a clue). Will they deplore this any further?
Lord Davenport hires a vampire hunter named Ms Kleiberson (is that really her name?) to get Grayson. I think she's a hunter but maybe she's just a PI. First they capture Renfield to see what they're up to. Meanwhile Mina talks to Jonathan about why Grayson is so interested in them. Harker convinces her that his motives are completely pure. Yeah right.
After more sexy times, Lady Jayne tries to break it off with Grayson but he puts up a fight. Later after much prodding, Dracula gives Josef permission to off Jayne. Please don't do that. She's the best part of the show. But have no fear, it's all a setup. When Josef attacks a sleeping Jayne, Dracula is there and knocks him out. Then Jayne beheads Josef. Dracula feigns being unconscious but Jayne revives him. As they embrace, we see a wicked smile on Dracula's face. It's all part of an evil master plan.
Favorite quotes and other asides:
- "The huntress made a fool of you... I besech thee, let me kill her"-Josef "Make her scream"- Grayson reluctantly agreeing to "something".
- What's up with girl wrestling bout that Greyson takes Jayne to? That seems really out of place.
- And there's talk of invading some Persian oilfields. Again, do we care? Nope we do not.
- Van Helsing is still working on the daylight. The problem is Dracula has no beating heart to pump it through his system. How are they going to get around that?
Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). I enjoyed this episode. The pace was good and there were several developments with different plot lines. Word on the internet is "Dracula" will be canceled soon. If it's true, three of the main reason would be: 1. The pace of the show out of the gate was not fast enough; 2. I definitely think it was a mistake to give Dracula a Texas accent; 3. Perhaps they should have made the show about a vampire but not necessarily Dracula (since he's such an iconic character).
