Dracula Episode 2 Recap: Smells Of Rotten Eggs

"Dracula" is starting to grow on me (a little). Sure the plot is kinda a snoozer and not much happened in this episode. Do we care if Dracula financially cripples members of the Order of the Dragon? I do not. But if you take it for what it's worth (eye candy and sexy times with some horror thrown in) it's a good time.

Here's the highlights from episode 2:
  • Why did they name this episode "A Whiff Of Sulfur" (other than Dracula says it when referring to the Dragons)? If I had a new show I would avoid such titles (in case the show really stinks). That's just asking to be ridiculed.
  • We learn some of the backstory of Dracula and Van Helsing. Van Helsing liberated Dracula from his tomb because he wanted help bringing down the Order of the Dragon. The Dragons killed both of their families and now they will seek their revenge. Van Helsing also works with him in present day to find a cure so Grayson can go out during the daytime. PS Dracula is afraid of needles. Well you're not a very tough vampire are ya? Ya big fanged baby!
  • Dracula tries to get closer to Mina by hiring her finance, Jonathan Harker, as Vice President of Public Affairs. Seriously? Your company has one person in it...YOU! And he also buys Harker a house. That's one hell of a sign on bonus you have there Dracula! Wouldn't you be suspicious if someone just gave you a house? I know I would be.
  • Harker announces at a party that he hopes his future wife will give up medicine and do something more suitable to a woman. She unfortunately hears this and is upset. Yes he's a male chauvinist but let's face it, everyone back then was. Dracula can use what Harker said to lure Mina away from him.
  • I didn't really understand the significance of the drug addict seers. What purpose do they serve on the show?
  • Mina kisses Harker in public in front of a women (who covers her daughter's eyes). How scandalous! I thought that was funny.
  • Grayson offers to buy Lord Laurent's shares of the British Imperial Cooling Company but he's not interested in selling. Harker digs up some dirt on him. Dracula goes to a party and finds out that Laurent is gay and is fooling around with Lord Davenport's son. Now he can use the info to blackmail Laurent into selling him his shares of the company. Again do we care? Aren't there better things for Dracula to do with his time besides plan a hostile company takeover? Maybe like having sex with beautiful women and fanging people? Just a thought...
  • Mina passes an important surgical exam thanks to words of encouragement from Dracula (the only way a dream fails is if you abandon it). And her professor at medical school is.... wait for it... it's Van Helsing. What are the odds of pulling that off in real life?
  • We find out that despite being locked in a coffin since the 1600s, Dracula really is a very liberal guy. He's all for women's rights (Mina), gay rights (Laurent) and people of color rights (Renfield). Sorry dude, I'm having a hard time believing that. I'm glad you're progressive and all but you are the guy that impaled thousands of people on spikes (so I'm guess you're not all down with the value of each person's life).
  • Lady Jayne continues her affair with Grayson. He imagines Mina during sex with her. Hello! You are with a really hot woman. How bout just thinking about her? Anyway I'm slighting confused. I assume that Lady Jayne does NOT know that Grayson is a vampire. Or does she? Is it part of a master plan? We see in the final scene that, after Dracula attacks a woman, Lady Jayne chops off the poor victim's head so she wont turn into a vampire. Lady Jayne is the most interesting character on this show. Lots more of her please!

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). Good mindless fun. The costumes and settings are lovely. I especially like the opening credits. And that car that Dracula was riding in was cool. It moved at a snail's pace and I think had lanterns for lights.

  1. Sheldon says he is liking this show more, whilst I am finding myself bored by it. I'm probably not going to continue watching unless things heat up a LOT more.

  2. I agree 100% Bratfink. Lots of people (like me) were hoping for sexy times and vampire action (not an MBA class). I really hope it picks up soon!
