Continuum Episode 8 Recap: Playtime Is Dangerous

I liked this week's episode (entitled "Playtime") much better than last week's. It reminded me of Total Recall.  Not sure where else they can do with the series though. It seems like most of the options have already been explored. Liber8 could:
  1. Try to get back to the future- check, tried that.
  2. Try to kill the ancestors of whoever they want to get rid of- check, tried that.
  3. Try to kill Kiera- check check, still trying to do that.
  4. Effect the present so the future will change- check, still working on that.
  5. Kill Alec- unckeck, they just found out about him so haven't tried that yet.
Other points to ponder:
  • Why do shows about hackers always have like 27 monitors? Who needs all those monitors?
  •  I like Betty. Let's see more of her!
  • I still can't decide if Kellog is a good guy or bad guy. In this episode he was a good guy.
  • The VR scenes had a "Lawnmover Man" quality to me. Does anyone else remember that movie? If not, see my blog on worst movies of all times: http://gmonster320.blogspot.com/2013/01/worst-movies-of-all-times.html
  • Why does Kiera not have a self reboot function? Feel a headache coming on (or you want to murder your partner), hit reboot instead.
  • Alec found some files in Kiera's chip from his future self so this should be interesting. Always start with the README file first.
  • What does this Torsion energy drink have to do with anything? Is it product placement? Get some Mountain Dew, mix it with Red Bull, slap a new label on it and you have Torsion.
  • Am I the only person that thinks Carlos is a really bad cop?

Episode 8 "Playtime"

Kiera and Carlos investigate when two murder-suicides happen in the same day - where the killers immediately committed suicide after eliminating their victims. The only tie between the two is a local computer gaming company, where both were software testers, that's been doing more than just developing video games; it's developing an immersive holographic program and Kiera decides to try it out. The effects on her are devastating - Kiera's HUD system short circuits and her internal electronics go haywire. Kagame and Liber8 attempts to take control of her, while she is in this bad state. Alec works frantically to reboot her processors and manages to save Kiera from killing her partner. At the same time, Liber8 discovers who is behind Kiera - Alec, while Alec also finds a previously unknown file in Kiera's systems - discovering it is actually a message from his future self, addressed to him.

Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). Bonus points for the fight scenes between Kiera and Carlos. Still not at 4 Monsters yet though. Maybe next episode.
