Episode 9 "Family Time" opens with Keira and crew in a helicopter in the future. They shoot at Kellog and his sister. She is killed. Next Kiera and Carlos are at a farm. She sees a horse for what I think is the first time. They are investigating the purchase of a large amount of fertilizer. It turns out that its Alec's home. Julian (Alec's step brother) and his friends/young Liber8 used the fertilizer to make a bomb.Alec, his parents, Kiera and Carlos (who has been shot) are taken hostage. The actor playing Julian is very good at sneering. Kiera is trying to keep Carlos alive. She tells him she has a husband and son that she may never see again. I know Kiera is emotionally guarded but i was hoping for more feels between the two characters here. Of course Kiera saves the day. Alec's step father is shot by the police because they think he's the terrorist. Julian escapes and is picked up by Kagame. Keira ends up at Kellogs.
Episode 10 "Endtimes" was the season finale and my favorite episode to date. I really enjoyed that the cast live tweeted while the show was going on. There was a lot happening this week. Kiera slept with Kellog. Why didn't we get to see any of that? I was hoping she'd hook up with Carlos instead. Kiera meets someone else from the future named Jason. He was sent farther back into the past though and been waiting for the revolution to start. He built a time machine and only lacked the metal alloy that Kiera conveniently just stole back from Kellog.
This is where all the time traveling gets crazy. Kagame and Alec have a conversation. Alec asks if Kagame knows him. Kagame says they will have a conversation 50 years in the future. Julian's attempt to blow up the target was thwarted (or so we think). He was actually just a diversion. Kagame goes to the real target and blows himself (and who knows how many innocent people) up. Next Sonya goes to the hospital, kisses baby Kagame on the head and gives his mother some papers from him. She is now the leader of Liber8 (since he is dead and a baby at the same time). Will she kill Travis? If she does how will that affect the future? It turns out Jason didn't have a working time machine after all. He was just another whacko in a tin foil hat. Is it in Rachel's contract to cry in every episode? How does she do that?
In the last two scenes, Alec goes to Kagame in the future. He was not killed in the blast because he knew what would happen. He has a proposal for Kagame. Next Kagame goes to an old man in jail (who is... wait for it... he's Julian). Julian says Kagame should do what Alec proposes. Next, in present day, Alec calls Kiera. He has opened the file his future self sent to his present self. Alec tells Kiera he sent her to the past and she'll "never guess why". And with that my little brain is blown. Is this whole thing an elaborate scheme for Alec to correct what he created in the future? What if Alec sent her back to kill his past self? That would be interesting. And they mentioned moles in the government. Who else in the present knows about his plan?
Thus concludes season 1 of Continuum. I really enjoyed the first episode and the last two. I was kinda bored during a few of the other episodes. Season 3 begins in Canada in April. Not sure how long before it airs on SyFy.
Favorite quotes:
- What happens in the future, stays in the future- Kellog to Kiera regarding her role in his sister's death.
- You don't have to do this. It has already happened- Kagame to Kiera before he blows up the building.
Wikipedia:
Episode 9 "Family Time"
Alerted to a bulk purchase of alarming quantities of ammonium nitrate (a fertilizer used in explosives and agriculture), Kiera and Carlos visit Roland Randol's farm to check up on such an excessively large purchase of farm fertilizer, and identify who's been purchasing it. Having tracked the source to Roland's farm, Kiera is somewhat taken aback to find Alec there, not realizing that Randol is his step-father. Kiera is shown her CMR suit is about to be restored to full functionality by Alec. Randol assures them that there has been a mistake and that he never purchased as much fertilizer as they claim. When they check the storage shed however, they find a truck rigged with the chemicals and ready for use as a bomb. It's Randol's son Julian and his friends who are looking to make a statement, even though the elder Randol has never preached violence. Events spiral and mushroom's into a tense armed standoff - Carlos is shot and they are taken prisoner, but Kiera and Alec try to gain control of the situation.
Episode 10 "End Times"
After spending the night sleeping with Kellog (and subsequently managing to open his safe and steal back the piece of the time travel device), Kiera meets Jason, who convinces her he was in the control room when the time travel device went off only he was sent back to 1992 and for 20 years has been waiting for this particular day - the day a bomb goes off at a significant corporate target; killing many people and starting the evolution into the world of the future. Kiera races against time to stop the terrorist attack. Meanwhile, Alec and Julian’s place in history will become defined by the horrific event - Alec finds out Julian has been recruited to Liber8, and before he can warn Kiera, Kagame and his company capture Alec - their arch-enemy's enabler - in the present. Kiera and the others manage to evacuate the office building where they think the explosion will take place, and Alec escapes, but it doesn't work out as planned; they realize too late the wrong building has been evacuated. Kagame is then able to enter the correct building and activates a suicide bomb, killing himself and hundreds of others, as well as destroying his target. His instructions left for Sonya are for her to succeed him as leader of Liber8, and to this end, she levels a gun at Travis to shoot him. Kiera learns there are unknown parties from the future at work in the present, and the terrorist attack is all part of a plan that was hatched in 2077, by future Alec, who masterminded Liber8's escape, and Kiera's subsequent transportation to the past, all deliberately. The season ends with Kiera, despondent when she finds Jason's claims of returning to the future are insane, with Kellog on his boat, heading out to sea. She is about to learn the reason for her transportation to the past from Alec; who has finally decrypted the message from his future self.
Grade: 3 Monsters (out of 5). I would give these two episodes a 4. Overall I would give the season a 3 1/2 Monsters. I would still like to see more depth in the characters. Maybe next season.
