The Americans Episode 5 Recap: COMINT

Official synopsis: A crucial agent crumbles under emotional distress and threatens to topple a valuable network of KGB informants. Professionally, Philip and Elizabeth are tasked with infiltrating the FBI's new communications encryption system while personally they are forced to grapple with one of the darker aspects of life as a spy.

From thefreedictionary.com COMINT is:
n.an abbreviation for communications intelligence; technical and intelligence information derived from foreign communications by other than the intended recipients.

Another great episode. Most of the show centered on the Russians trying to get to one of their US informants-- Udacha. The Russians were also trying to get the US communications encryption codes so they can continue to keep tabs on the Americans. Why are they in someone's trunk? I do not know. Isn't there a safer place for the FBI to hide them? Anyway, the scene with Elizabeth snaking her way into the other trunk was fun. And how can she just crawl out of the trunk and waltz out of a supposedly secure parking lot?

There was lots of sex for intel in this episode. Both Elizabeth and Nina traded sex for information. Phillip tried to work his mojo on Martha. He also traded sex for intel during the last episode. I wouldn't be a very good spy since I couldn't get anyone to have sex with me. Poor Mrs Beeman isn't getting any either since Stan would rather learn Russian-- ouch!

I just love the scenes with Claudia. I get the feeling she could do something horrible any minute.

At the end of the episode Elizabeth shots Udacha in the head before the FBI can get to him. That is harsh. The man's wife just died and you shot him in the head. Well he was kinda depressed.

I wonder if everyone on this show knows how expendable they are? When their handlers get everything they want, the relationship will be terminated (and in most cases the person will be terminated).

Good news! Per Entertainment Weekly, FX has ordered a second season of The Americans (13 more episodes). There are still nine more episodes to air of the current season, which wraps May 1.

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). So close to perfection.

  1. so Elizabeth shot udacha because the KBG felt he was "jittery" and thought he was going yo flip on them and become an informant for the FBI?

    1. I think so. I think when informants are no longer useful they are removed to clean up any potential lose ends. Thanks for reading my blog!
