If you've read my previous recaps, you know I have a love / hate relationship with "The Following". Well actually its more of a sorta-like / hate relationship. Tonight I am officially done though.
Last week Joe escaped for prison. The pixie girl (ok Emma is her name) reunited Joe with his son Joey. Tonight was the usual-- people running around and Kevin Bacon showing up 5 minutes too late for everything.
Dear "The Following" writers, here are some helpful suggestions to make your show better:
- Your main baddie doesn't have any teeth. He just spouts Poe and all his followers come running. I don't see anything about him that would make me follow him out of a burning building. I know it's hard to create a character that would rival Hannibal Lecter but there has to be something better you could do with Joe.
- The good guys (the FBI) are completely incompetent. You have to make them a little believable for anyone to want to watch.
- I really like Kevin Bacon but I don't see anything about Hardy that makes me want to root for him. The sad part is I'm kinda hoping Joe will kill him so the show can be over.
- What's up with the sex/ violence stuff in this episode? When Joe killed Charlie I thought I had somehow switched to the porn channel. He hugged Charlie and I swear nuzzled his neck while stabbing him. He gingerly laid him on the plastic that had so considerately been placed on the floor. Then Joe (still covered in blood) heads upstairs to have sex with the pixie girl. The other two followers are still downstairs. The guy first tries to strangle the girl and then they have frenzied sex. Uh... ok... I like to get my freak on as well as the next person but I don't think sex and violence should be combined. Otherwise you end up with some truly scary people.
Grade: 0 Monsters. GMonster has left the building. "The Following" has an interesting premise, great actors and a good budget for car chases and fight scenes. The story lines are seriously challenged though. It would have been better as a two hour movie on Lifetime.
