I don't usually review Greys but the finale was so good I am compelled to do so. Shonda Rhimes certainly knows how to jerk us around. Every season finale is a roller coaster of emotion. Is everyone OK? Who is going to die? Oh they looked like they were going to die but they're OK now. Oh I didn't see that coming. No I cant go to the bathroom. The best scenes happen in the last 10 minutes. And so ends season 9. There was a storm and the power went out. Then there was a bus crash in front of the hospital. In other words, just a normal day at Grey-Sloan Hospital. At least there wasn't a plane crash or a crazy shooter. Here's the highlights:
- MerDer- Meredith goes into labor. She cannot deliver naturally because it may kill the baby. She has to have a C section. Is Meredith going to die? I wasn't so sure for a few minutes. Bailey saved her though. That scene with Derrick and Christine running through the hall in slow motion was very effective.
- Calzona- Arizona cheats on Callie with Dr. Lauren Boswell (who I don't like). Cheating is one thing but the rant she went on about Callie was too much. She seriously needs to be slapped. Get the F#$%^ over losing your leg already. Yes its terrible. The options were either you died or you lost your leg. Perhaps you'd rather be dead? And Callie stuck by your mopey ass all this time and this is how she gets repaid? Sorry I needed to get that out. I feel better now.
- Japril- Jackson rescues a girl from the aforementioned burning bus. Then there's an explosion. We're not sure if he made it. April starts screaming and tries to run into the flames. Luckily he got out alive. April's fiancé notices her behavior is a little extreme for JUST a friend. Alright she's downright hysterical. April tells Jackson she loves him. She asks Jackson to give her a reason NOT to marry Matthew. What will Jackson say? Please say YES and quickly.
- Crowen- Christine and Owen are splitsville AGAIN since he wants children and she doesn't. How many times are they going to do this dance?
- Bailey- Bailey is afraid to go back into the OR due to her recent experience of killing a patient with that infection she had (which infected the patient due to defective gloves). She finally breaks down and saves Meredith (when apparently ruptured her spleen when she fell down the steps earlier in the day). Yeah Bailey. And MerDer's baby boy is named... wait for it... why Bailey of course. How sweet.
- Alex- wants to tell Jo that he loves her but he's afraid. His track record is not so good. He finally breaks down and does it. She tried to dodge him because she's crazy too but he finally gets the point across. How long do you think before they have issues or someone dies?
- Richard- Richard is busy keep everyone and everything functioning during the storm. He goes to the basement where the maintenance man has had a heart attack while trying to get the lights back on. In the last scene we see Richard laying on the floor from an apparent electrical shock. Oh dear, is he going to die? Don't you people know electricity and water don't mix? You are a doctor after all.

The storm is coming, and the damage might be irreversible. Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital is experiencing a power outage, and this pushes the doctors to be innovative in the ORs, the ER, and the NICU. Meredith goes into labor, but because her baby is coming out face first, she must have a C-section...in the dark. In the NICU, the parents must "bag" their babies because the oxygen machines' batteries are dying. The parents are essentially breathing for them. Cristina is called upon by Dr. Webber to save a man’s life; in order to locate the wound, she can only listen to the man’s heart. The make-shift lighting affects Cristina's ability to visually assess the patient accurately. A bus gets flipped on its side, and all the doctors manning the ER rush out to rescue those on the bus while it's on fire. April breaks down when the bus explodes, thinking that Jackson died. Luckily for her, he and the little girl he found walk away with minor injuries; this creates doubt in April concerning whether or not she should keep her engagement to Matthew. Callie finds out about Arizona's sexual encounter with Dr. Boswell, and tears, shouting, and blaming ensue. It all circled back to Arizona still being upset that Callie let her leg be amputated. Karev tells Jo, after some hesitation due to his past lovers, that he loves her. Cristina calls it off with Owen because she’s not willing to give him what he really wants, kids. Dr. Bailey couldn't make herself operate on a patient before because of her fears, but she rushes to Meredith's side when she finds out that Meredith has a major splenic bleed that was caused by her fall down the stairs. She saves Meredith's life, and as a result, Meredith and Derek honor her by naming their son Bailey. Dr. Webber's life ends up in jeopardy when he flips on the hospital's generators; he was electrocuted because of the water on the floor. |
Grade: 5 Monsters (out of 5). I'm not sure how a better story could be crammed into an hour. GREAT acting by everyone on the show. This is why I love Greys!
