This episode focused mainly on the relationship of the two sisters Amanda (the mayor) and Kenya (the brothel owner). Kenya and one of her "girls" are kidnapped by a bioman. Datak (who is pretty much the mob boss of Defiance) won't help Amanda and Nolan look for her. Stahma has a private chat with Amanda and slyly suggests that if Datak was elected to the town council he might feel inclined to help.
Meanwhile Kenya figures out what's really up. The baddies are harvested adrenalin from humans to sell as a drug. She kills the lab guy and is rescued by Amanda, Nolan and Irisa before the bioman can kill her.
We also find out through a series of flashbacks that Kenya and Amanda's mother is not dead. Amanda lied to Kenya to protect her from the truth. Who wants to bet on how long it will be before their mother shows up in Defiance? On an unrelated note Rafe and Quentin share some father/ son bonding time by traveling into the mines. There they find drawings of the mysterious device Rafe found among his dead son Luke's belongings.
Best line of the episode thus far-- Nolan says to Stahma "Looks like I had my eye on the wrong snake." Stahma looks up from her knitting, gently smiles and says "Aren't you sweet." Dangerous indeed. Stahma Tarr is my favorite character on the show. Jaime Murray tears up every scene she's in. It's funny. I know Jaime is under all the makeup but I only see Stahma.

Episode 4 "A Well Respected Man"
Nolan intercepts a shipment of weapons being transferred by two of Datak Tarr's men; unknown to both Nolan and Amanda, the town council had made a deal with Datak to arrange for weapons to be delivered to the town after the loss of the shield generator. Nolan's relationship with Amanda's sister Kenya develops, somewhat to Amanda's displeasure. Kenya and one of her girls are kidnapped by Ulysses, the bioman employed by Datak as a prizefighter; he is kidnapping street people and taking them to a human lab technician, Miko (guest star Robin Dunne), who is harvesting their adrenalin to use as an illegal drug. Nolan and Amanda clash with Datak to get her back, but he refuses to help; Stahma Tarr suggests to Amanda that she show respect to Datak by making him a member of the town council. With grudging help from Datak, Nolan locates the lab; meanwhile Kenya has realises that her wanderings in a maze, pursued by a Volge, are a virtual reality, escapes and kills Miko. Nolan, Irisa and Amanda arrive in time to save Kenya from the Ulysses. Rafe and Quentin descend into the sealed shaft where Luke had found the strange object, and discover a set of disturbing cave paintings featuring the object. Datak takes his seat on the council and Nolan realizes that Stahma is the more dangerous of the two.
Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). A solid episode. Defiance is growing on me more each week. Looks like they have already been renewed for a second season. Yeah!
