"The Truth" is this was the best episode to date. Lots of suspense and lots of action. One of the funnest parts of this show is anticipating what the main characters will do next. When Norma says they'll go to the police with the Chinese girl tomorrow, I'm not sure if Norma plans to kill her because she loves Shelby. When Norma hugs Emma and says if she had a daughter she 'd want her to be just like Emma, I'm not sure if she's planning to kill her since she thinks Emma will take Norman away.In the last episode we found out "the truth" that Zack really was holding the girl hostage. In this episode "the truth" is that Norma killed his father and then Norma disguised it as an accident. Norman of course doesn't remember any of this and questions if Norma killed him instead.
Other points to ponder:
- I thought Shelby would be around till the end of the season. I'm very surprised the writers got rid of a central character so quickly. The way they filmed his demise was great suspense though. I was on the edge of my seat.
- The gun battle in the house was funny. Seriously, blind people are better shots than the deputy and the drug smuggler.
- What happened to the Chinese girl (apparently her name is Jiao but no one seems to know it)? Shelby chased her into the woods and that's the last we saw of her.
- One thing that didn't work for me is why Norma called the police and then she and Dylan hung out discussing Crazy Norman until they arrived. Ugh how are you going to explain yet another dead body (and a cop at that)?
- What prompts Norman's trances? I thought the common denominator was Norma being threatened (which was true when he killed his father and attacked Shelby). But not true when he attacked Dylan and when he thought his mother told him "you know what you have to do". However in these two cases Dylan had called Norma a whore and she was in danger of going to jail. So looks like it all revolves around Norma but of course everything in Norman's life does.
- Norma trying to drag an unconscious Norman down the steps and to the car was funny. Another funny scene was when she went crazy and was doing donuts with the car around the neon sign in the parking lot. That made me laugh.
- It is very evident that Dylan loves Norma (even though he tries hard to act like he doesn't).
- This episode was so good that it felt like a season finale. Where can they go from here?
- Where is Bradley? Not that I miss her cause I don't.
Favorite quotes:
- "He can’t get away with it. Everybody always gets away with everything and it’s not fair!”- Norma about Shelby. Ugh apparently no one gets away with anything around the mother and son killing machine.
- “Shelby’s here. He found the girl in the motel room and she ran off into the woods. He’s there right now chasing after her"- Norma is response to Dylan telling her Norman is moving out. Judging by her reaction, she is much more concerned about Norman leaving than the poor girl being chased through the woods.
- "You can either get out of my way or you can help me"- Norman to Dylan about protecting Crazy Norman.
Episode 6 "The Truth"
Norma feels compelled to confront Deputy Shelby about the girl Norman has found. Norman stops her from leaving and they decide to let the girl stay overnight. Emma vehemently wants to report what happened to the FBI. As soon as Emma leaves, Norma tells Norman she won't report to the FBI until they recover Keith Summers' belt. Dylan and Norman go to Keith's boat and find the belt. They throw it overboard into the harbor. Shelby goes to the motel and starts kissing Norma. Reluctantly, she goes to a motel room with him. Shelby hears water running through the pipes. He goes to see who else is at the motel and he finds the girl from his basement. The girl runs off through the woods, Shelby chases after her with a gun. Norman and Dylan return and tell Norma they disposed of the belt. Shelby returns and holds them all at gunpoint. He leads them into the house and begins to assault Norma. Norman attacks Shelby in a fit of rage. Shelby throws Norman into a wall and Norman falls unconscious. Dylan grabs Shelby's gun and begins shooting at Shelby. A game of cat and mouse begins between Shelby and Dylan. Norma drags Norman out to her car but realizes she has forgotten her car keys. Gun shots ring out from the house. A figure comes staggering out and much to Norma's horror it is a grotesque Shelby, who has been shot several times in the face and abdomen. As he lifts his arm to shoot her, he falls to the ground and dies before he can pull the trigger. Dylan comes out of the house and he and Norma embrace, he reveals that he intends to tell the police the entire truth. Norma reveals (via flashback) the truth about Norman's father's death, Norman killed him in a fit of rage after seeing his father beating Norma, and Norman has absolutely no recollection of it, believing his father's death was truly an accident. Norma confides to Dylan that Norman needs to be protected. The police arrive at the motel.
Grade: 5 Monsters (out of 5). Perfection as far as I'm concerned. When I take the time to watch a show twice without any interruptions, its really good.
