And they were worried about the last episode being too graphic? This one was pretty gruesome. A crazy guy (Elliot) is filleting bad people and using hooks and fishing line to turn them into angels so they watch over him in his sleep (since he has a brain tumor and is afraid of dying while asleep). Uh ok. That makes no sense whatsoever. When he killed the security guard and hung him from the scaffolding, the scene looked exactly like the one in "Silence of the Lambs" where Hannibal escapes from his cage and hangs a disemboweled cop up to freak everyone out. Anyway AngelMan kills himself by, you guessed it, turning himself into an angel. And bonus points if you knew angels dont have genitals. Im proud to say I've honestly never thought about it.
Per Bryan Fuller on Twitter "COQUILLES refers to a dish served in a shell, usually scallops. In the case of tonight's #HANNIBAL that shell refers to our physical body."
Other thoughts:
- Lecter invites Jack and his wife Bella (whose real name is Phyllis) to dinner. Dont accept. Say you're busy for the next thousand years. But of course they go anyway (like they always do in such shows).
- Bella has stage 4 lung cancer but hadn't told Jack. Hannibal smelled it on her at dinner. Hannibal also smelled something later on a Will. Run for your life!
- Bella needs to work through a lot of things (her anger at Jack, an affair, her illness, etc). She starts seeing Lecter as a therapist. I don't see any problems there. Do you?
- I was afraid Hannibal was planning to eat Bella but having cancer may save her. When Jack previously came to dinner without her, Hannibal said something like "when can I have your lovely wife at my table"? Super freaky. And she's a vegetarian besides.
- I very much enjoyed the scenes between Jack and Bella. Lawrence Fishburne and Gina Torres are great actors. More please!
- Hannibal is trying to put a wedge between Jack and Will. Come on boys. All three of you can be friends. No need to be jealous.
- That elk keeps following Will around in his dreams. What does it mean? Anyway I'm just glad he has a job. There aren't that many acting gigs for elk in Hollywood. I hope he's saving his checks.
- Where is Gillian Anderson? I thought she was going to be in this episode. And Eddie Izzard is in next week's. Yeah!
Episode 5 "Coquilles"
A murdered couple is found in a motel room, posed in praying positions with the flesh of their backs opened and strung to the ceiling to give them the appearance of wings. Using hairs collected from the motel pillow, the BAU team discover several medications used to treat brain tumors in the killer's bloodstream. Will surmises that the killer is transforming his victims into guardian angels to watch over him because he is afraid of dying in his sleep. Meanwhile, Crawford's wife Bella (Gina Torres) becomes Dr. Lecter's new patient. She is reluctant to tell her husband that she has terminal lung cancer because he already has too much to worry about. Graham starts to suffer from episodes of sleepwalking and continues to dream about the feathered stag that has been haunting him since the Hobbs case. He confides to Dr. Lecter that the pressure of looking into killer's minds is starting to break his psyche and Dr. Lecter attempts to use this to create a wedge between Graham and Crawford. The angel-maker is tracked to an old farm, but is discovered to have committed suicide and transformed himself into an angel. During the investigation, Crawford realizes the reason for his wife's distant behaviour and promises to help her through her illness any way he can.
Grade: 3 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). Not my most favorite episode but I'm still very much enjoying Hannibal.
