Defiance Episode 3 Recap: The Devil In the Dark (With Hellbugs)

The episode opens with a guy in red shoes jogging though the woods. Then something eats him. See this is why I don't jog. Why take the risk? Next, back at the brothel Kenya is "entertaining" a customer who has a strange food fetish. Whatever its your money dude. Unfortunately he explodes (and I don't mean in a good way). Someone is using hellbugs to kill people. Next the hellbugs attack the Castis and Christie but they manage to escape.

Irisa is having flashbacks or visions of something. Its time for the Irathient version of the sweat lodge thanks to Sukar. Smoking and chanting and sweating ensues. Rynn the Irathient woman is behind the killings. Her parents were murdered by the two men so she sought revenge. No problem there but now she wants to wipe out the rest of the town. Stephanie Leonidas is a talented actors. I bet its difficult to be that expressive under all that makeup and prosthetics.

The Castis continue to amuse and intrigue me. Datak wants to know why Alak's girlfriend wont bathe with them. I said last week, they are a kinky bunch. I'm happy we're seeing more Castis in the next episode.

Hellbug fighting time! But first lets disguise our scent by rubbing hellbug poo all over our bodies. This is where the show gets hokey. Could ya spent $20 on some better CGI? Maybe a big hairy spider? Anything? Anyway the Mother of All Hellbugs and her 10 million babies are blown up. That wasn't much of a fight. Hellbug disaster is averted and Rynn is going to jail.

Irisa's got the visionary blues. So last week we learned a little about Castithan culture, and this week we get to see some of the Irathient ways. The Irathient, with their red hair and yellow eyes, seem to be the polar opposites of the albino-esque Castithan. They wear bright, mismatched clothing while the Castithan appear to wear whites and grays almost exclusively.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). This episode was so good I watched it twice. I'm adding Hellbugs to the list of things I'm afraid of. They are below ticks but above clowns. PS The show could use more butterflies.
