Once Upon A Time Episode 20 Recap: The Evil Queen Looks Smashing In Leather

This episode features the superb acting chops of Lana Parrilla who has made the Evil Queen (along with OUAT writers) the most interesting character currently on television.  She goes through every emotion imaginable in 0 to 5 seconds flat (and takes us along for the ride). First I definitely hate her, then I feel sorry for her, then I almost like her, then I hate her again.

The show is split between FTL where the Queen tries to disguise herself as a peasant girl to do in that pesky Snow White and present day Storeybrooke where she's once again plotting to get Henry back by killing everyone else.

In FTL the Queen doesn't understand why everyone hates her and loves Snow. Uh probably because Snow's not trying to kill them all the time. Her solution? Kill Snow of course and then everyone will love her. Uh no. What kind of logic is that? Me thinks Regina has fallen off her horse and hit her head one too many times.

Other episode highlights:

  • Tamara and Out of Town Greg untie Hook, tell him that Rumple is still alive (curses) and ask him to help them in their evil scheme (which we still don't know the details of but rest assured it will be "evil").
  • Instead Hook (who is always playing both sides) tells EQ. She says she needs his help with her own plan. She needs a "trigger" from the caves beneath the library. We find out that "trigger" is code word for "bait" to throw down in the pit with a howling beast. The creature appears to be the latest incarnation of Maleficent. I thought Emma killed her the last time she was down there (back when she was a dragon). I'm confused. Please bring back Kristin Bauer van Straten. I love her! Anyway, EQ gets her stones and Hook managed to survive (thanks to help from OOT Greg and Tamara).
  • Emma doesn't trust Tamara (and rightfully so). Never trust anyone that says "you can trust me". She and Henry commence spying on Tamara by hiding in Emma's car. Uh I'm pretty sure she knows it's you. You're the only one in town with a yellow Volkswagen. Anyway Operation Prayer Mantis doesn't go as planned since they're caught by Neal. And nothing is found under Tamara's floor boards. Does anyone hide stuff there? I do not. Please don't look in my sock drawer.
  • Some of the dialogue made me laugh out loud. Hook had previously tricked EQ into putting on the "cuff". It doesn't seem to be her style although she looks really smokin' in leather. Out of Town Greg explains the cuff to Regina "You might be able to get rid of the leather but inside are the toughest metals and machinery known to man and right now they're counteracting every magical bone in your body". It always cracks me up in shows when they need a completely illogical explanation for something and they get all "sciency". Is the government wasting millions of our tax dollars making magic repellent cuffs? I hope not. I want my tax dollars spent ONLY on looking for aliens and Bigfoot.
  • Who are Tamara and OOT Greg working for? Tamara says something about "I have to send these back to the home office". Is the home office in Omaha? That's sounds like a place a "home office" would be.
  • And the conclusion of the story in FTL was that Snow told a disguised EQ she would welcome her back into her family. EQ is very touched. But then of course she discovered all the slaughtered villagers and took that back. Snow had a chance to shoot EQ with her bow but does not. I swear it's all one step forward and two back with those two.
  • And only two episodes left till the end of the season. Previews for next week show were about the Lost Boys (who cares, the only Lost Boys I care about are vampires). It also showed EQ being tortured by OOT Greg. Oh dear, that I definitely care about. Other sites are reporting that Henry gets kidnapped by Tamara and Out of Town Greg in the finale. One can only hope.

Grade: 5 Monsters (out of 5). Anything that focused on the Evil Queen gets 5 Monsters. We've seen far too little of her in the last few episodes. Only two to go till the end of the season. I'm already sad. I may need to lay down for a while.
