Breaking Bad Episode 16 Recap: Felina... Or Artificial Sweeteners Are Bad For Your Health (Series Finale)

And so, after six years, we have come to the end of "Breaking Bad". What did you think of the series finale of "Breaking Bad"?

At first I didn't understand why Walt was wasting time visiting Gretchen and Elliot Schwartz. Remember last week he was upset when he saw them on Charlie Rose. They said Walt had nothing to do with the success of their company. Apparently I STILL don't have enough faith in the "Wisdom of Walt". He shows them the ~$10 million that he has left. They are to give it to Walt Jr when he turns 18 (in a few months). It will be in the form of an unrevocable trust and Walt's name will never be attached to it. How does Walt know they will comply? He has hired two hit men to ensure they keep up their end of the bargain (but they are actually Badger and Skinny Pete with laser pointers instead).

Next we see Jesse in a woodshop making a box. Is he free or in heaven or what? Nope he's daydreaming cause he's still in the warehouse attached to a dog chain making meth.

Today is Walt's birthday. He makes a 52 with his bacon (just like Skylar used to do). Walt then goes to his house and gets the ricin cigarette which was hidden in the electrical outlet.

Lydia is at a coffee shop to meet Todd. Unbeknownst to them, Walt is also there. He offers to sell them a new way to make meth without methylamine. It can be theirs for a million dollars. Lydia strings him along with the intent to kill him.

Marie calls Skylar and tells her to be on the lookout for Hank. He has been spotted everywhere. But Hank is already in her new tiny apartment. Skylar says he has five minutes. Hank gives her the lottery ticket with the GPS coordinates for where Hank and Gomez's bodies are buried. She can use it for leverage with the prosecutor. He tells her it will all be over tonight.

For all the talk over the years of Walt cooking for the good of his family, he FINALLY admits to Skylar that it really was about his ego. At least she had the truth in the end. Skylar lets Walt say goodbye to Holly. There is no tearful goodbyes and no hugging and kissing. How said that their lives and marriage have come to this. Walt then secretly watches Walt Jr get off the bus and walk into the house.

Walt goes back to Uncle Jack's where they are planning to kill him (per Lydia's request). He has other plans for them though. He rigs the AK-47 (that we saw previously) in the trunk of his car. He hits his car alarm and then throws his body onto Jesse. Everyone is killed except for Walt, Jesse, Todd and Jack. Jesse gets up and strangles Todd with his chain (I'm really glad they didn't let that little psycho live). Jack then tries to keep Walt from shooting him but saying he'll tell him where the rest of the money is. Walt shots him in the head anyway. Great camera angle from behind Jack with the blood splatter.

Then it's just Walt and Jesse left (as in the beginning). Walt slides the gun over to Jesse. Walt says "do it". Jesse says not until Walt says it's what he wants. Walt says its what he wants. Jesse still cant shoot him. Walt will have to do it himself. Lydia calls Todd's cell phone and asks if it's done. Walt asks how she's feeling. Does she have flu like symptoms? That's the ricin he slipped into her Stevia (artificial sweetener) so she will die. And then he hangs up on her.

Jesse gets in Walt's car and speeds away (laughing hysterically). Walt goes into the meth lab, takes a look at all the equipment and then lays down to die (he was shot in the gut by the AK-47 earlier). We then see a shot from above as the police arrive and gather around Walt's body. And end series.

Observations:
  • Walt apparently wore the same clothes in the first and last episodes (a green shirt and cream colored jacket and khaki pants).
  • The one good thing Walt did was save Jesse but I still don't know what the motive for that was (since he gave him to the Nazis to kill earlier). I would like to think he has a guilty conscious but it was probably he needed someone to shoot him in the end.
  • This finale was much better than "Dexter" or "The Sopranos" in my opinion. I don't know about you but I need CLOSURE with my shows.
Favorite quotes:
  • "Elliott, if you're going to go that way you're going to need a bigger knife"-Walt to Elliott
  • "My children are blameless victims of their monstrous father"- Walt to Gretchen and Elliott
  • "It made me feel alive"- Walt to Skylar as to why he really started cooking meth (hint it wasn't just for his family as he kept saying)
  • "You are very scheduled oriented"- Walt to Lydia
  • "Goodbye Lydia"- Walt to Lydia (after telling her she will die of ricin poisoning)
  • "Say you want this. Nothing happens till you say"- Jesse. "I want this"- Walt asking Jesse to shoot him
Grade: 5 Monsters (out of 5). The beginning was a bit slow but all hell broke lose in the end. I though it ended exactly as it should have. Walt needed to die. Jesse needed to live (because he was the only one with a moral compass left). I just wished Marie would have put a cap in Walt's ass instead. That would have been a crazy ending. Thanks "Breaking Bad" for a wonderful six years!
