"I destroy everyone I love."- Dexter Morgan
Dexter finally ends with last night's episode entitled "Remember The Monsters". Was it (as some are saying) the worst finale in the history of television? AV Club gave it on "F". Was it a sheer act of writing genius (as a few people are saying)? I thought it was actually pretty good given the suckiness of the rest of the season. I found the scenes with Dexter and Deb to be very touching.
One of the things that disappointed me most about the show is that the Dexter we met at the beginning is NOT the one we ended up with in the final episodes. He finally got some sense in the end but that still doesn't make up for everything else.
- Dexter's primary motivation previously had been to protect his sister. After he got together with with Hannah, it was "good luck to you, I'll send you a post card on holidays". Sorry Deb but sex trumps sister every time.
- Dexter's other primary motivation was to protect his son. He then faked his death so Harrison could be raised by an unstable serial killer? I just don't buy that he thinks Harrison would be better off with her. Also she has no legal rights to the child (unless possession is 9/10ths of the law in Argentina).
- Dexter had always been about controlling his "dark passenger" by using "the code". After he got together with Hannah all he talked about was how much he loved her and they were going to be together for the rest of their lives... Blah, blah, blah. You can't just change the primary motivation of a character for no apparent reason.
- Does Dexter think he deserves to die? Apparently not since he's still alive and working as a lumberjack. I read somewhere that they couldn't kill off Dexter because that would be an easy out. Sorry, not buying it. Dexter deserves to die for all the pain he caused everyone in his life (especially Deb).
It is truly sad that a once great show languished WAY too long due to Showtime's desire to suck as many dollars out of it as possible. The most important thing I learned from watching eight seasons of "Dexter" is what they did NOT do, know when to make your exit and do it while you're on top.
How "Dexter" ended:
How "Dexter" ended:
Dexter, Hannah and Harrison are at the airport ready to start a new life in Argentina (except Hannah is stuck in the bathroom since Elway is at the airport looking for her). Dexter puts him on the "no fly list" but the entire airport is evacuated (so they're not boarding that plane anytime soon).
The Brain Surgeon heads back to the hospital but is taken into custody. Dexter goes in to do a GSR. He leave an ink pen on the table. Saxon grabs it and stabs Dexter. Dexter then takes the pen and stabs Saxon in the neck. Game over! Quinn and Batista see the tape and declare it self defense. Hannah and Harrison board a bus to get out of town. But unfortunately Elway is on the bus. She stabs him with a horse tranquilizer and gets off the bus.
Deb who was shot in the last episode by Saxon/Brain Surgeon but it looks like she'll pull through. Instead a clot cuts off blood supply to her head and she goes into a vegetative state. Dexter takes her off life support. Could you maybe give her a little time to make a miraculous recovery? I guess not.
He then takes her body out of the hospital (cause hey, who would notice such a thing) and puts her on the boat. He dumps her body in the sea. We think he has drowned by driving the "Slice of Life" into the path of the hurricane (as do Hannah and Harrison) but he actually starts a new secret life as a lumberjack. Sure give the guy an axe. I don't see any issues with that, do you?

How "Dexter" should have ended:
I'm fine with Deb dying since at least that put her out of her misery. What should have happened though is Dexter, Hannah and Harrison move to Argentina. At some point the honeymoon wears off though. Hannah begins secretly plotting to kill them. She first kills Harrison but by then Dexter is too weak to stop her. She then slowly kills Dexter. Right before he dies she whispers in his ear "I never believed in true love dear". And end scene. Now that would be a fitting end.
Or how bout this ending instead:
Dexter takes Deb's body on the boat. He weighs himself down with weighs (the burden of being a serial killer) and jumps into the water with her. There we see him sinking to the bottom surrounded by all his victims. Now that's poetic justice.
