Dracula Episode 10 Recap: Why Are Vampire Children So Much Scarier Than Adult Vampires? (Season Finale)

We have reached the end of the road for Dracula. Well, not Dracula the vampire but "Dracula" the TV show (which is a shame since the series had such great potential). I love the characters of Lady Jayne, Lucy, Renfield, Van Helsing and yes even Dracula (despite his stupid accent). Jonathan has even grown on me since he stopped being a wuss.

Here's what happened in the final episode entitled "Let There Be Light":

Grayson does some advertising 1800's style (engraved cards and a truck with a phonograph) for his Wireless Technology Thingamabob. While I couldn't care less about Geomagnetic Energy, it does create a reason for all the major characters to be in one place at the same time. Grayson believes the success of this project will destroy the Dragons financially. Little does he know they've set the contraption to explode (thus killing everyone in the vicinity).

Meanwhile Van Helsing has decided to end his partnership with Dracula. Renfield visits Van Helsing and finds him burning papers and dancing around to classical music. OK then, that was weird. Anyway, Van Helsing stabs Renfield to death. I really didnt see that coming. Then Van Helsing has Browning bring ransom money to an abandoned house in exchange for his children's return. When he arrives, Van Helsing asks if he recognized him. Remember Browning killed his family. Browning says he'll have to be more specific (he's killed a lot of people). This upsets Van Helsing so he drops Browning into the basement via a trap door. His children are also down there. Plot twist-- the kiddies are now vampires and chomp down on daddy. I didnt see that coming either. Why are vampire rug rats so much more frightening than regular vampires? Van Helsing burns down the house with all of them in it and then walks away.

All the vampire hunters in the world have descended upon London. They are to send up one flare for each vampire they kill. See what people had to do before cell phones? Also there's a seer named Loiza Scaverra who uses a relic (the blood of Christ) to find the vampires. Uh...ok. Not sure what that has to do with anything. These scenes were the weakest of the show in my opinion. They should have been removed and more time spent on Lucy.

Speaking of Lucy (remember she was bitten by Dracula in the last episode), she is sick in bed. Her mother is sitting by her side. Lucy would like a hug and then the fangs come out. I love you Lucy! I don't care if you're a vampire or not. Plus your mother was irritating.

Mina attends the demonstration. Jonathan tries to get her to leave before the explosion (remember he helped the "reporters" wire the device to explode). In his defense, I'm not sure Jonathan knew it was set to blow up but instead to just malfunction.  How sweet that Jonathan still cares about Mina though. I would have left her cheating ass there. So Mina tells Dracula the resonator is about to blow, then Jonathan tells Dracula what he did and kaboom.

Thanks to the Seer, Lady Jayne FINALLY gets a clue and figures out that Grayson is indeed Dracula. She goes to the wreckage site. Was that a flashlight she was carrying? That definitely looked like a flashlight to me. No they didnt have those in the 1800's. Anyway Dracula is there. They fight. She punches him, he punches her. She stabs him, he stabs her. They he throws her through the air and she is impaled on something. That man loves a good impaling. Jayne again tells Dracula that he loves Mina and always will. Yes, we all know that already.  Jayne asks Dracula to kill her instead of turning her into a vampire. "You at least owe me that." So he obliges and kills her. FOR SHAME "DRACULA". She was the best thing about this show. You Super Suck!

Mina runs back to Dracula's house. He is alive but a little bloody. They kiss for the first time and then jump in the sack. I would have suggested someone bathe first... but that's just me. And in the final scene Van Helsing tells Jonathan that Grayson is really Dracula. It looks like the two will work together to get rid of him once and for all.

Favorite Quotes:

  • "Dracula will never walk in the sunlight again... much like yourself"- Van Helsing to Renfield right before he stabs him to death.
  • "You slaughtered my family" (Van Helsing) "That hardly narrows it down, does it" (Browning). When Van Helsing asked Browning if he knew who he was.

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). A great way to end a show (except for killing Jayne). I will not forgive you for that... EVER. In my opinion, "Dracula" could have been a fun romp for several more seasons if only a few things were tweaked-- a faster start to the season, much less business speak, no stupid accent for Dracula, more air time for Lucy and a few minor plot changes. Please let me know your thoughts about the show in the comments below.
