Helix Episode 3 Recap: Day 3 At Arctic Biosystems And All Hell Breaks Loose

This week's episode of "Helix" entitled "274" was another good one. I must say, so far, I am LOVING this show. Here's what happened in a nutshell:

When we last saw Peter he was attacking Julia in the shower. Now we're not sure if that really happened and if she's infected. Peter later turns himself in to Alan and says "help me". Is this part of a master plan to infect more people? I don't trust anyone on this show.

Doreen believes the virus has jumped from monkey to human. However when she goes back to find the monkey to try to develop a vaccine, it has disappeared. Sergio shows her all the monkey bodies outside in the snow. They draw blood from one to use instead. Doreen is very suspicious of what Sergio is really up to. I was worried he was going to bash her in the head (remember he killed someone who tried to escape last week). Luckily she seems safe for now.

Sergio tells Doreen he thinks Hataki caused the outbreak on purpose. When a growth factor is added to the new monkey's blood sample, it turned into a gigantic mass of black stuff (sorry, I dont know how else to describe it). I have no idea what that is. Both Sergio and Doreen agree not to mention it to anyone though so Hataki doesn't find out about it. And this folks is how the shit hits the fan. People have vital information which they don't share with others until its too late. I would have run screaming through the halls with what I found.

When cornered about what they're really doing at the base, Hataki is still elusive. Alan threatens him saying he'll go to the media and then pull his team out and just return after they're all dead. Hataki relents a little (I dont trust him) and says they had a number of very dangerous viruses (including smallpox). They were working on a cure for ALL diseases. The vaccine they developed was successful 25% of the time but killed everyone else.

A test is developed to determine the infected. Jules gives the test to herself and its negative. She is very relieved. Sarah (who Julie expects is also infected) also takes the test and she is negative. Sarah's hand is very shaky though and we see a big scar on her back. Not sure what that is about.

Alan was at first against shooting people after Daniel shot Dr. Sulemani (who said "they made me" before she bit the bullet). Alan removes the bullet and saves her. However his tune quickly changes when Sulemani eats a guard's face off and then sets her sights on Julia. It seems the infected are very angry. That scene definitely reminded me of "28 Days Later" and I thought was very effective. If you want to know what you're up against, this is it people.

A decision is made to segregate the healthy from the infected and vectors (those actively trying to spread the virus). They use the long abandoned lower floors of the base. I find it interesting that they were also doing something with a nuclear reactor. They seal the infected inside. Not sure what that is supposed to accomplish since we already determine they can break out and scurry through the ventilation system?

Jules is among the infected since she hacked up some black stuff. She still has her swab test in her pocket though and it reads negative. She rushes to call Alan to warn him that the test is not accurate but just then the phone goes dead. Sergio (I think) has blown up the satellite dish so they will not be communicating between floors and worse yet not with the outside world.

Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). "Helix" is quickly turning into my favorite new show. I hope they can keep up the momentum. And for anyone that is counting "274" is the number of people that have died on Alan's watch from various diseases. Dr Sulemani was number 275.
