"The Fall" takes place in Belfast Northern Ireland. It follows a serial killer named Paul Spector who disguises himself as a bereavement counselor and family man. Paul is played by Jamie Dornan who was previously Sheriff Graham on "Once Upon A Time". Jamie will also portray Christian in the upcoming "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie. Detective Stella Gibson (played by Gillian Anderson of "X-Files" fame) has been called in to lead up the investigation.
There are only five episodes total in season 1. The show originally aired in the UK in May 2013 on BBC Two. It can be viewed in the US on Netflix. Season 2 is planned for release sometime in 2014.
And I wont lie. The only reason I started watching this show is for Gillian Anderson. I don't know how she does it but she becomes more beautiful and compelling to watch on screen each year. I think she may be a vampire.
Anywho back to the show. No one is wise to what Spector is up to including his neonatal nurse wife. Their provocative teenage babysitter finds a lock of hair in Paul's desk. He beats her and retrieves it saying it was his mother's. She says it smells fresh... err, well I wash it sometimes. That scene struck me as being more disturbing than the actual murder for some reason.
Paul's young daughter is busy drawing grotesque pictures and having nightmares. It probably has something to do with Paul's murder stash being hidden above a ceiling panel in her room. Paul says he's working nights at a mental health hotline. In fact he's stalking single professional females so he can later strangle them, bathe them, do their nails and pose them (in that order). Freaky deaky.
Stella is a take charge kind of gal. That includes her personal life. She sees an officer she likes and before even getting to know him, gives him her hotel room number. Detective Olson stops by for a quicky but is later killed in front of his house by an unknown assailant. Things could get messy.
I'm not sure where they'll go with the remaining 3 episodes. We know who the killer is so it's just a matter of catching him. There doesn't seen to be any real suspense in the show. I would like to see more indepth character analysis of Paul and Stella. That would be interesting.
“No one knows what’s going on in someone else’s mind, and life would be intolerable if they did”- Paul Spector
Grade: 4 Monsters (out of 5). If you're interested in police chases and shootouts, this is not the show for you. Its more a slow burn of storytelling and character development. I would have given the show a 3 1/2 but since Gillian is in it I'm giving it a 4.
