"Survivorman's Secrets of Survival" has been airing on the Science channel since 9/6. It is a compilation of Les Stroud's previous shows. Each episode deals with one topic such as best methods for making a fire, purifying water, making a shelter, MacGyverisms, etc. I will try to do a blog entry on each but sometimes they're hard to catch. I really wish they provided an overview at the end of each show.
"MacGyverisms" are items meant for one purpose that can instead be used for a different one. Remember the 3 zones of assessment: 1. Immediately on your body; 2. Immediate surroundings; 3. Extended surroundings.
Les' top 5 MacGyverisms are listed below with number 1 being the most desirable method:
5. Making A Funky Trap- Traps can be made out of lots of things.
4. Keeping Warm/Cool- Wool is best for keeping warm. Use hot rocks if possible. Avoid heat stroke but cooling a bandana and placing it on your carotid arteries. If very hot, immerse yourself completely in a stream. Do anything possible to prevent blisters, cuts, etc.
3. Primitive Earth Skills- Make a rudimentary map of your surroundings.
2. Shelter Making Tricks- Always carry a good multitool.
1. Ripping Things Apart- A car provides lots of items for reuse such as seating insulation.
