12 Monkeys Episode 3 Review: A Future Without Chinese Takeout

When we last caught up with "12 Monkeys" Jennifer has been kidnapped by the Man in Black. In "Cassandra Complex" we see a photot of the person Jen refers to as "the one that got away". His name is "Henri Toussant". Dr Railly worked with him in 2014 in Haiti (and later found out he was killed there).

I'm Really Liking Jones

In 2043 Jones and company discuss the possible time travel options. Go back and kill Jen before she is kidnapped. Go back to 1987 where Leland says he first met Cole. But everything they suggest has possible consequences. And just a reminder that Cole can never encounter his previous self on any of these visits. They decide upon Haiti but Cole must not cross paths with Cassie or it will destroy everything they have worked for.

Cole and future friend Ramse chat about the scavengers getting closer to their base. We meet Whitley. Later Ramse and Whitley are on patrol. Oops, these two dont like each other. They encounter a woman named Max. Ramse knocks Whitley out. Ramse asks where Deacon is? Apparently Ramse, Max, Cole and Deacon were members of a group called the "West Seven". She says she doesnt know. She wants to comes back with them. Ramse instead sends her to a town 10 miles away where there are other survivors.

Stop Messing With My Girlfriend!

In 2014 Cassie and Henri have sexy times despite being in the middle of a catastrophic epidemic. So much for containment protocols people! Cole shows up but there is "temporal interference" so he's splintering back and forth between times. Cole finally catches up with Henri and tries to get the location of the "Night Room" that Jennifer keeps referring to. And then the Man in Black and his goons show.

So That's Where I Got The Scar

Cassie cuts her arm while attempting to give a patient CPR. Cassie decides this is the pandemic that will end the world. Cole attacks the Man in Black and gives him the scar that is on his face in the future. And it turns out Henri doesnt know where the night room is. He tells Cole to find the specialized equipment that is used to create the virus. Henri leaves knowing he will never get off the island alive. A fellow doctor (Jules) tells Cassie the outbreak is "River Fever". which is quite treatable and not the pandemic she predicted. He also implies that she is a nutcase.

Cassie Doing Doctor Stuff In Haiti

In 2043 Cole returns saying "I know how to find the virus". Then back to 2015 Cole is teaching Cassie how to fire a pistol. They will look for the containment system that Henri mentioned. Cassie asks what happened to Henri. Cole says they parted ways so he doesnt know. However we see Cole pull a gun. The implication is he shoots Henri so he cant give the MiB the same intel. We already saw Cole previously shoot Leland. Cole's gotta do whatever he has to in order to save mankind. Meanwhile Max reports back to a mysterious man (is it Deacon?) on what she found. Looks like the scabs will be attacking the base soon. That will put a kink in Cole's time traveling adventures.

This Guy Is Going To Be Trouble

Favorite Quotes:

  • "So this is Haiti? Cant say I'm fond of this place. So many people. I'm not what you'd call a people person."- the Man in Black. That guy is super creepy but he's got some great one liners.
  • MiB: "Who are you?" Cole: "You dont know me but you will."
  • "I know how to find the virus."- Cole.
  • "You cant hesitate. Every second counts. It's either you or them."- Cole teaching Cassie how to shoot.
  • After a Chinese food delivery. Cole: "That guys a general [referring to General Tsao's chicken]"? If the future doesnt have Chinese food, I dont wanna be there.

Grade: 3 3/4 Monsters (out of 5). "Cassandra Complex" moved the series along but was not as enjoyable as the first two episodes (which were great). I'm still very much enjoying the series though.
