Constantine Episode 13 Review: Evil Rednecks Are Boring (Series Finale)

With "Waiting For The Man" we have come to the end of season one of "Constantine". This is most likely the end of the series as well since it hasnt been renewed. The Darkness is still rising. We're back in New Orleans with Jim Corrigan (before he becomes the Spectre).

Someone simply referred to as "The Man" has abducted three young girls and killed a detective. A fourth girl (Vesta) is lured away. Gary Lester (remember him?) speaks through a dead body to tell John there is a bounty on his head in Hell. Papa Midnite plans on collecting it. Midnite attacks John... but it's not really John. It's just a body that looks like him. Fake out! John lets Midnite live. I'm not sure why except they're both tried to kill each other multiple times so I guess they're even.

Even Steven?

The cajun dude marrying all the dead girls is captured. Should they take him to jail? Nope, Constantine has something else in mind. He encourages him to run and then goads Jim into shooting The Man. We dont see it but hear the gun go off.

Am I Dead Yet?

Later, Zed tells Jim he's going to die but she doesnt know where or when. He says he better make every second count then and moves in for a kiss. John sees this and feels jealous. I'm not really seeing a lot chemistry between John and Zed so that's fine with me.

John resolve to fight the Rising Darkness has been renewed after dealing with The Man. Did he represent some badder than usual human/demon hybrid? Not in my book. He's just a run of the mill cajun with a girlie complex. Serial killer rednecks have been beat into the ground havent they? Anyway Manny appears saying the tide is turning and they can win this battle. Whatever dude, whatever.

Say It Aint So Manny! Say It Aint So!

And just when we think the episode is over, there's a surprise. Papa Midnite is being carted off to prison. Time stops and the two cops in the front of the patrol car are dead. Manny appears and says the bounty on John's head has been lifted. Midnite asks Manny if he works for the Brujeria. Manny replies "No, the Brujeria work for me". Say what? I thought he was a good angel. Was this thrown in to create a fun ending or was it the intent all season? If it was the beginning intent, Manny is taking his own sweet time putting his plan into action. Maybe angel time is different from human time.

This Puts A Whole New Spin On Things

Grade: 3 Monsters (out of 5). I know some people thought this was the best episode of the season but I found it really boring. I expected an gigundo battle with the forces of evil but that didnt happen. Besides the surprise ending, I think this was one of the weakest showings this year. If this is how "Constantine' ends, I'm very disappointed. Disagree with me? Please leave your thoughts in the comments below.

  1. I think you're exactly right, except you gave it too many monsters.

  2. Thanks for the comment. I am hearby downgrading my rating to 2 Monsters. If "Constantine" is renewed (its not looking likely) they need to do some retooling if they expect to keep their fan base.
