Helix Season 2 Episode 3 Review: Say Hello To Your Family

Day 3 of "Helix" begins with Sister Amy giving Brother Landry a "lending hand". Read into that what you will. Needless to say, we now know who controls Landry's actions. That was the most disturbing scene of the entire episode. Moving on.

Next someone is chopping wood. Daniel and Jaye speak with him.. They're both very dead so these are either hallucinations, ghosts, or clones. The wood chopper is a long haired Hatake. Welcome back Hatake! You were one of the best parts of season 1. I hope you whip this island into shape.

You Dont Need A Chalkboard To Figure This Out Kyle

Kyle tells Sarah that the blood samples are missing. He accidentally left them in the shed. Rookie mistake. Peter and Sarah head to the shed. Sarah suggests they get Alan involved. Peter says they've already discussed this. Alan is not the person he used to be. He blew up Ilaria's headquarters in Paris (and a number of innocent people/immortals along with it). Sarah seems to have conveniently forgotten that Alan told her to take the others and leave immediately. That's an immortal for ya-- always forgetting important stuff.

Hatake sneaks up on Julia with an ax (so apparently he's on the island 30 years after everyone else too). Julia says the TXM-7 virus has wiped out most of Ilaria. She just wants to save the remaining few. She and Hatake are now on the same side. He's not sure he can trust her.

Thirty years earlier, Alan (ie Brother Jerome) asks what's up with the wine barrels they're rolling into the building. No alcohol is allowed on the island. A cult member tells him to mind his own beeswax.

Sister Amy is harvesting Seraphim's Breathe. Is that a real plant? One whiff and it will make you slit your own throat. It was used by the Mayans in sacrifices. Landry gives it to the children in a game called "time machine". I have no idea why it's named that. The children each inhale and their eyes start darting around.

The shed is attacked by someone yelling "Open the door, I can smell you're in there". Sarah and Peter make a run for it. It looks like Peter's a goner. Sarah shoots the guy dead. They confront Brother Michael but dont get anywhere. I have a hard time accepting he's clueless. However I do believe that Sister Amy is staging a couple behind Michael's back to take over the place. Sarah thinks whatever is affecting these people is being created in the abbey through the use of plant grafting.

Father Daughter Bonding Time

From now on I'm refering to Julia/Hatake's time frame as ITF (for "in the future") and the current time frame as ITP (for "in the present"). Try to keep up. ITF Hatake makes tea for Julia. HallucinoDaniel wants Hatake to kill Julia. HallucinoJaye does not. We'll see how this plays out. Hatake slips a little something into Julia's drink. Did you notice the "World's Greatest Dad" mug? He later gives her truth serum. She tells him she's dying and that she still works for Ilaria. And Julia's out again.

Children Of The Corn

ITP Lizzie finds Kyle. She says the children are sick. He runs to help. The drugged kids stone  him (yes with actual stones) to the tune of "Sunshine Day" (which I remember as a Brady Bunch song). Oh dear. I feel like I'm on drugs. There has been some speculation as to if Kyle is the next Doreen. I still miss ya Doreen! Where's my monkeys?

Oh and there's something about a pit that the kids dont want to go into. Kids, if you keep trying to kill people you're all going into the pit (where I might add there is no wifi reception). That will teach you.

Peter and Sarah discover a seriously wounded Kyle. He quickly recovers and they go see the children. None of them remember anything about what happened. I still wouldnt trust the children of the corn there if I was you. Elsewhere Alan breaks into the room with the barrels. He sees lots of yellow goo jars. He breaks open of the barrels and finds a human tooth. He is then promptly whacked on the head by... wait for it... by Peter. This should be good.

When Julia awakens ITF, Hatake has changed her clothes. That's icky since he's her father. He says "say hello to your family" as he turns her chair around. She sees the bodies of Jaye (who was fried) and Daniel (who blew his head off). Has Hatake been carting these bodies around for 30 years? For God's sake man, Daniel doesnt even have a head. That's just gross. Julia screams, I scream, we all scream.

Favorite Quotes:
  • "Issac and Soren have completed their paths."- Landry to Sister Amy.
  • "My mother's (Anne) control is an illusion. One we must keep providing for her... There is no 'us' Landry. I've told you many, many times."- Sister Amy.
  • "The last thing we need is another variable and Alan is just that."- Peter to Sarah.
  • "The CDC is very good at exploring the darkness. We have very bright flashlights. Right now I'd like to turn that light on your children."- Kyle to Sister Amy. That was a pretty hokey line.
  • "Alan's not the man he used to be. It's time we all faced that."- Peter to Sarah.
  • "Say hello to your family."- Crazy Hatake to Julia as she sees the decaying bodies of her mother and headless brother.

Grade:  4 Monsters (out of 5). No I dont have any idea what's going on but it was still fun. And if nothing else I'd given it a "4" for Hatake's return. I just hope he stays for the rest of the season. Bonus points for the actress playing a younger Jaye. She does look like Julia.

We didnt Caleb at all in this episode. Where did he go? Did Hatake create this virus too to wipe out the immortals or is that a completely separate story line. What's happening to these people may be due to a fungus. Sarah suggests ergot poisoning (which is from contaminated wheat and is the suspected cause of the hysteria at the Salem Witch Trials. But virus or fungus, the end results are pretty much the same.

I was at first confused about why this episode is named "Scion". I drive one and I didnt see any cars on the island. But now I understand. A "scion" is also a young shoot or twig of a plant (especially one that has been grafted or rooted). Henceforth, I am renaming my car "sprout".
