Helix Season 2 Epi 4 Review: To Bee Or Not To Bee

"Densho" opens to the sight of bees flying about in the orchard to the tune of "Flight Of The Bumblebees". This is our BIG clue as to how the virus is transmitted. It is... wait for it... bzzz. It's bees. We see a culty (Travis) get stung and then go crazy and kill his girlfriend (Misha) the next morning.

I Really Should Have Killed My Brother Last Season

Meanwhile Peter is texting someone about Alan. He is told to report back but his mission remains the same. Peter wakes up Alan (who was bashed in the head last week). Both we and Alan suspect that Peter is the culprit. It is later revealed that Peter has been communicating with Sergio Balleseros. Remember him? He is at the Ilaria headquarteres (so Peter is working for Ilaria as well).

Gone Fishing

Thirty years in the future, Hatake is still delusional (and thinks Jaye and Daniel are out for a hike). Remember last week he roofied Julia's tea. Hatake tells her he can help her with therapy (since she's dying of some unknown ailment). Unfortunately the therapy seems to be to kill her. Luckily HallucinoDaniel shows up and wants to go fishing. Off they go to the theme song from "The Andy Griffith Show". Hilariou!. Meanwhile Jules (who is tied to an autopsy table) is desperately trying to escape.

Michael's Three Best Girls

The cultists have a town hall meeting. Everyone is getting nervous. Brother Michael attempts to reassure them. Alan, Peter, Kyle and Sarah are temporarily on the same team. They review the facts about the virus. They have termed it mycotic (myco for fungus plus psychotic = mycotic).

Elsewhere Brother Michael tells his "three best girls" to handle the matter discretely (whatever that means). They say they will. "Good, I dont need any more pictures on this wall just yet" says Michael. So apparently Michael is immortal and is the father of all the children on the island? When the three women are alone, Agnes slaps Amy for disrespecting her mother and for being a general pain in the ass. I'm liking me some Sister Agnes.

Back in the future, Hatake returns to the cabin and injects Julia in the neck. Luckily he removes the needle right before the unknown white substance goes into her body. Julia tricks Hatake into untying her. She needs one last hug from her father. Instead stabs him in the neck with a syringe. She runs into the woods with an ax. He follows with a samurai sword.

Sarah and Kyle discover a small puncture wound on Travis' body. Bees are transporting the virus. That's why the victims had a high sugar level in their systems. OK, that doesnt make sense, but whatever ya say. Kyle finds several hives in a wall and brings back the honey for analysis. He doesnt bother to wear protective gear. Kyle isnt too smart. Will he survive till the end of the season? The honey is determined to be full of mycotic whatever. That's great but we sitll dont where the substance originates.

Family Therapy Immortal Style

Smackdown in the woods-- There's an epic battle. Hatake is about to stab Julia but Jaye appears and distracts him. Julia stabs him in the stomach with the ax. He offers her the sword saying "it is my legacy". She asks what the writing means. He says "Densho, I should have never made you like me." Aside: "densho" is a Japanese term meaning "to pass onto the next generation or to leave a legacy". That was a touching and very well acted scene.

Hatake stumbles back to the cabin. ImaginaryJaye says "I will never leave you Hiroshi". Will Hatake die? If so, how can that be since he's immortal?

This Bear Told Me You Are A Bad Mother

Back in the present, Olivia (Soren's mom) is not in any hurry to find her son. The CDC crew needs to evaluate Soren since he's the only person to recover. Olivia speculates that maybe the visitors brought the disease from the outside. Sarah finds Soren's bear and confronts Olvia. Her response is to stab Sarah in the stomach and run away.

The episode ends with Julia laying on a rock in the woods. She has that big gash from Hatake's sword. This is intercut with Sarah bleeding out on the floor saying "my baby". Again, how can either one of them die? They are immortal. But this is "Helix" so it doesnt really need to make sense.

Favorite Quotes:

  • "Coming here was my second change to repay my debt to humanity."- Hatake to Julia.
  • "You know I've never been a big fan of surprises."- Julia to her daddy.
  • "I dont need any more pictures on this wall just yet."- Brother Michael to the 3 women.
  • "Where would we be if anything happened to mother?"- Sister Ages to her daughter and granddaughter. OK so her mother is still alive too? Are they immortals as well?
  • "We might be looking at an insect born vector."- Kyle to Sarah.
  • Kyle: "That's what we're calling the pathogen-- mycotic, myco for fungus plus psychotic." Alan: "Catchy."
  • "Immortals are the real plague."- Alan.
  • "I need a hug."- Julia to her father.
  • "Densho, I should have never made you like me."- Hatake to Julia.

Grade: 4 1/2 Monsters (out of 5). Excellent fight scene between Hatake and Julia. I dont necessarily understand what's going on but who cares. It's still fun. And again no sightings of Caleb this week. Where did that guy go? And I still think he's Alan and Sarah's love child so the baby cant die.
